Don't Barf!

Some of you may not approve of lowering the R170 but I love the lowered look so I did it. I already know how you all feel about these wheels so let's not go there; soon as I make a short 4 hour drive I'll have the new one in hand. Ride is stiffer but I like it, feels more connected to the road. It's roughly a 1.25 drop, # 3 pads front and # 1's rear. This is going to sound silly but if the front don't settle a little more I'll have to change the pads/shims but should I go up or down meaning down from 3 to 1 or 2 or up from 3? Not sure which one will aid in a lowering the front just a little more? Also if anyone can recommend a better shock do tell. I did the double din nightmare swap some months ago; it was a lot of stuff considering most of all the original interior parts were either broken or cracked all to Hades!

(Don't Barf is directed at the bling! bling! wheels, if you want them let me know) since they are 3 piece wheels I may be able to replace the centers with something more appealing just to do something different.

If you like it that is all that matters. Personally I like the look of a lowered R170. I never was a fan of the wheel gap from the factory.

Who cares what others think?

You've paid you money, worked on the car and are getting it as you want. How it should be.

These are low enough for me.

One thing:-
"Also if anyone can recommend a better shock do tell."

Better in what way?
Softer/Harder etc

I went with the H&R sport springs with #1 pads all around, lowered the car about 2 inches. Rides hard and tight, very happy I did this mod.

Im lowered on D2 RS coilovers, about a 3/4 inch drop. i think the car will look much better after the wheels are changed. as others have said though, it's your car, do what makes you happy. with the new wheels that will be going on, i suggest leaving them the factory color, no need to repaint them. i've run 18" wheels on my car, this was before the coilover, when I had just h&r lowering springs, IMO with non-stretched tires, 18" wheels are slightly too big for the r170, making it look almost like a toy car. I currently run 16" wheels (same diameter as factory) but with a slightly smaller profile tire than factory. as it sits now, it's a very aggressive fitment but looks fitting

Thanks for the warm responses, SLK owners are really great people! SirClass, I would love to see your car. Is it possible you could send me a few pictures? Avel Du, I do not drive as if I'm on a track and there aren't many canyons around where I live for me to go topless through the twistiest. This said, I want a functional shock which will complement the sport H&R springs and It wouldn't hurt if it was a bit softer than what I'm experiencing with the stock shock in place. Good call on leaving the wheels in their factory color. I thought about it, did some digital fitting with a avatar car of my same color and I like the stock look/color better. I thought to go with # 1 pads all around but some one running the exact tire sizes recommended # 3's front and # 1's rear so that's what I did. Once I get my new shocks I may pull the springs and slip the # 1's on; then if I don't like it then I'll change them back. I have the Mercedes telescoping spring tool so it's pretty quick and easy to do. I've had my car for some time now and It sort of grew on me. I've thought to go test drive a new one but I'm afraid I may like it and wound up with a car note. I only feel this way when my alarm goes off for no reason at all on a completely dry day when it hasn't rained in weeks! It drives me crazy. I finally pulled the fuse and was done but I don't have interior lights now. Thanks again all!

I like the lowered car, looks very nice. Not sure about the wheels, too much metal, but I like chrome so maybe it's a wash. Nothing wrong with making your car your own! Because it is!

here are the stages my car has been in so far, with the different wheels and lowering

This was with 18"AMG wheels, normal tires, h&r springs, no roll or pull yet on the fenders

Last summers setup. D2 RS coilovers, 18" BBS LM rep wheels, stretch tires, rolled and pulled fenders

current setup, same as above, except these are 16" wheels with a meatier tire

the specifics of each setup regarding wheel sizes (diameter, width, and offset), spacer(s), tire size and all that can be provided too if you'd like

FYI this thread is 2 years old

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Florida!

First please update your location and vehicle (Put Looking!)(year?: 1996-2017, model?: 32, 43, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about 30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does not update your profile.

Join the gang! Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already. New Members Introduce Yourself Here - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable or to ‘edit’, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM/edit. You can always pm a moderator.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
FREE!! Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.
