R171 wheel on R170 ?

Greetings to all! I am a new member here and i need your help, i believe you people are a lot more reliable and experienced than many mechanics out there. This is my first post so bare with me in case i do it wrong.

My father has a 2003 SLK R170 Final Edition (European Version) in perfect condition with super low miles. Unfortunately i dont get the pleasure of driving it cause i have some issues with the available leg room ( i am tall). There is not much i can do with the low profile seats, i believe the problem is the big ''ugly'' steering wheel. Do you think i could replace it with a sportier, smaller wheel of a latest benz model (such as R171 SLK55, or W204 63)? Do you know anyone who has attempted such a mod? I think i have seen a posting here dealing with the purchase of R170 DTM steering wheel, which seems to be smaller with flat lower end, would that be the only choice? Please advice, thank you in advance

Hi, Welcome to the forum!

The R171 steering wheel may not be compatible with the R171. If it bolts on, that's great but the R171 has more buttons on it than the R170's did. If you transplanted the wheel to the R170 then I am assuming you will have dead buttons that don't do anything, including any shifter buttons on the reverse side or paddle shifter levers.

As for size, I'm not sure about the steering wheel diameters being different. They may be the same for all I know.

For the DTM type steering wheel with the flat bottom, that would be mine. That wheel is the same size as the original wheel, except for the flat bottom. It was built from an original SLK32 wheel. It may look smaller in the pictures because the wheel is thicker (padding on the grips). It does make it somewhat easier with the flat bottom to get in and out of the car, though.

Here's the thread I posted about my install: https://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...slk32-amg.html

You'd be better off looking for a W203 (last generation C Class) steering wheel - and don't forget you'll need an airbag to go with it. I'm about 90% sure the splines are the same between the two. From a button standpoint, Daytona's right, but I'm pretty sure the CAN signaling is the same, though.

I'd personally look at what Daytona did with his wheel - I think it looks awesome - and avoid having to replace both the airbag and the wheel...
