Suspension upgrades 99 SLK230

I recently purchased this 99, SLK 230 and generally really like the car. With it's extremely low miles it is worth putting some resources into it which will increase the handling characteristics along with maintaining the comfortable ride quality which is preferred for the longer drives and most importantly by my wife.

As someone who has had a range of performance oriented cars including one built specifically for performance/track driving programs and events, there are some things in the SLK suspension which do not seem to be consistent with the sports/touring car look it has. Basically, the body roll is significant and the shocks seem to be rough or clunky...not a smooth and balanced ride or cornering one would expect in a finer automobile like a Mercedes.

I am looking for some recommendations on which parts like sway bars and shocks fit with the goal I have described and am hoping there are some individuals who have mastered the ride of these cars who can point me in the right direction. Again, I am 57 years old and my hard riding track car days are behind me...looking for gentleman performance tips...with much appreciation.

noting that you do have some years under your belt, I'm not sure how keen you would be on upgrading your suspension to a coilover set-up. i am currently running coilovers but I have also run bilstein HD struts with h&r lowering springs. in terms of other suspension upgrades the only thing i've seen is an upgraded h&r front sway bar (the pre face lift didnt have a rear sway bar). I know there are other small pieces such as aftermarket/upgraded toe and camber components but that's all ive seen. i've been looking for a front, upper, strut tower brace to help with chassis stiffening but have had no luck without options that require drilling or welding.

Thanks, I am familiar with H&R components and the heavy duty shocks/struts and the reduced ride comfort they develop. I will check into the rear sway bar and maybe some OEM replacement upgrade shocks/struts to see if that gives me the added handling I am looking for without the stiffer and more uncomfortable ride.

I am not certain my SLK is a pre-face lift as it looks just like the 2000 and up SLK230, it has the automatic hardtop and the more rounded front end. Will check to see if it has a rear sway bar...I just assumed it does but have not been under the rear end of the car yet. We are still getting used to it and taking drives on the weekend to enjoy it as is before determining the Winter improvements to be done. Overall, very happy with the car and I think just a little tweaking to get it to handle just a bit better will be all I want or need to do.
