supercharger pulley upgrade

I am ready to squeeze a few more ponies out of my 230 kompressor. Any advice? Is there more than one pulley upgrade out there?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. It seems that ASP has the only pulley upgrade out there. Will they recommend all the extras I need- cooler plugs or pressure regulator? Or maybe I don't need those things...

ASP racing is the only upgrade I have found here in the USA. Maybe Germany has something not available here. By the way, Germany is my favorite country. I love visiting there and driving the Autobahn.

Yes, Germany is beautiful. We love living here. Aren't the Autobahns just fab?

Must confess to a frisson of pleasure skittering down my spine everytime I approach the on-ramp.

Got a video of my speedo just hitting 210(kph) but can't upload it directly on to here. And the second best thing is...it's legal

This is the only one I have found too. ASP ASP331310. I am going to have to change my belts soon and was thinking about changing out the pulley. I am 100% new to this so I am also trying to find out if I can simply change the pulley and add a smaller belt. I am hoping I don't need some $1200 kit that I see people were buying back in 2005.

Hold up gents,

Latest from the Fatherland....

Someone we know here has an R170. He has done something with the supercharger and he's getting 40 more hp. I THINK it's a smaller thingymablob on the supercharger. I remember the product name was Speer. Not got all the details yet but he is emailing the info - at which time I can fill you in if you're interested. When I googled Speer in Germany, it came up with "chip tuning". Positive it's not a chip he was talking about. Could be wrong.

I'm getting this second hand from my boyfriend, so didn't talk to him myself. Should know more in 2 weeks or so.

Kleenmann discontinued their boost kit 4 - 6 months ago.
There is a German company called Vaeth that is very popular in Europe. They gave me the following quote 1.240,00 Euros.

170.100.V.019 Tuning-Kit V23K Performance Kit V23K 990,00 990,00
For SLK 230 Kompressor - (Origin 197 HP)
- Displacement: 2.295 ccm
- Max. power: 165 kW = 228 HP
- Max. torque: 320 Nm at 2.900 rpm
- Vmax: 242 km/h
- Fuel: SuperPlus (ROZ 98)
- Emission standard: unchanged
Pulley Kit: Belt pulley combination to increase supercharger rotation
and boost pressure, including sports air filter insert
and electronical adjustment.

Kleenmann used to offer a kit that included a new crank pulley, a new alternator pulley and a new serpentine belt.

ASP Racing offers just a crank pulley and said to buy a new belt from a third party. They suggested Gates part #K060560

So Kleenmann used to supply a new alternator pulley but asp and vaeth do not. I wonder if putting on the pulley without changing the alternator pulley would cause any damage over a long period of time to the alternator. In addition Vaeth also provides a sports air filter insert and electronical adjustment for the ECU. The only issue I have with them is that its more $ than I want to spend. I would be fine with the $875 that Kleenman was charging.

I just got off the phone with Cory Umemoto the Technical Manager at Kleenmann USA.

He said there were actually two different kits for the r170. The boost kit which is listed on their website for $869 is for the older r170 2000 and prior. The newer SLK 2001 - 2004 uses a different pulley. It is pully that uses 4 set screws and is attached to your existing crank pulley. They kit also comes with a new belt and the cost is $995.00. He said they only have a handful left over at the Denmark HQ which he can order for us.

Based off of this info, I think ASP has the best deal. I spoke with whoever responds to the [email protected] email account. They have a pulley for $750. Once you install the pulley, you mail them back your oem pulley and they give you back $300. You then have to buy the a new belt via thrid party. They suggested Gates part #K060560

Vaeth is the most expensive but they give you that entire kit.

I honestly don't know which kit is best and would assume that the HP difference between the best or worst can't be more than 8-10hp. If anyone else has anything to add I am all ears. For me, $450 + a belt fits my budget for what I want to accomplish.

There are plenty of other options besides kleemann, at least in the US. Needswings and Eurocharged are good ones.
Kleenmann advertises 404 HP and 370 lb-ft of torque for the K1 kit. Piecing together other upgrades, I'm at 493 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque.

Sorry to hop on and, kind of, hijack the thread but will running a new map or crank pulley kit on a R171 200 send fuel bills into the statosphere (bearing in mind I do quite a bit of town driving)?

I just completed the Eurocharged deal for my 2002 SLK32 AMG. I already had the NeedsWings Dual cold air intake system. Euro charged me $650. for the 65mm pulley, cable for the tune and, of course, the tune itself. The pulley turned the car into a terror. I have owned several forced induction vehicles but never felt 3psi like I did with this pulley! WOW! Then I had an as yet unresolved issue when I did the tune. Coincidence or not my SC stopped boosting!
I put the stock tune back in that Euro sends back in the same file as the race tune, still no SC. I believe my IC pump is bad. I cannot feel it working. Fuses are good. I have a new IC pump order at $120. shipped it is much better than the dealer cost of $1000.! I am not sure this new pump will fix the SC but it is good insurance, who knows how long the bad one(so I think) has been on the motor.
Certainly at $650. for everything this is the best deal I saw. Once the SC is functioning if the tune adds even 20HP I would be pleased. On the drive back from the shop that changed the pulley I was on an interstate and must have spent more time closer to 100 than to 60mph, the car would dart from 80 to 100 in what felt like about 3 seconds. The car was much more capable of getting out of tight traffic with the instant torque on demand.

Performance

Well these first round of mods are completed. The costly DCAI was first to go on. I would have gone with a DIY set-up but more I looked the nicer the NW DCAI became more attractive and makes 26whp when the corks are opened. I did not go with the electric cut out before the cats which made the most power. The pulley was next and it turned the little Mercedes into a car that scamps between other traffic and can do this with hand tools, maybe an air gun to break the stock old loose.
Look at what is changed on the Boost addition mods that the pulley works with. I was surprised it had to be had become a different car. I have run many turbo enhanced vehicles and one other SC and would take the turbo's hands down only because I am comfortable with them with power coming on easier, just have to tune for boost early, not helping this tune so back to the SC's that I have used since the second week of July when I totaled the Cobra.I googled boost powered vehicles for sale in Florida and found a decent ride from ExoticSportsPerformance in Pompano beach. I never knew Mercedes did not allow forced induction rides. THEN I SEE IT STICKERED BACK IN LATE SUMMER 2001. THE MORE I READ I WANTED TO DRIVE ONE THE MORE. Then I saw a 2002 for sale with just 72k miles and 2 Corners ahead of me. They were asking $13,000, I ordered $12,775. and it was exoTIC FOR ME, A MERCEDES. A 2-SEAT WITH A HARD TOP THAT RETRACTS INTO THE TRUNK. lAST MOD WAS THE TUNE AND I GOT WHAT I MAS CONCERNED ABOUT ANYWAYS. SOMEHOW THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR WAS NOT READING CORRECTLY AND IT WAS REPLACED WITH A STOCK PIECE BACK IN SEPTEMBER. PERSEVERANCE AND A DATALOG THAT WAS PART OF THE SOFTWARE EC SENT ALONG. AT WOT THE TPS READ 58%. 42% FROM WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING. JERRY FIXED IT ON THEIR SPORT TUNE. AFTER ACHEIVIENG THE 50HP I SUSPECTED I MAYBE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED BUT SPEED IS ADDICTING AND I AM AN ADDICT, AMAZING LITTLE CAR. SINCE MY DAYS IN THE FLORIDA .

Pulley, cheaper than about every mod I see later. Am I glad I got the pulley, sorry I did not get it, this motor, set-up for stacked pulleys, smaller on the SC and a larger crank pulley. The SC pulley I got raised boost about 3 psi. and when the motor is running enough crank. With

'' a larger crank puller also it would get the SC turning about 16,888 or a little higher but also making 20-21psi very quick. To do this would require Needswings fuel pump, free flowing inline fuel filter, 550cc injectors, stock are 390cc units, correct me if I am wrong. If all goes well now 350+ WHP is possible with runs in the 12's, not something like a MID 12 AT 115MPH!
Now the returns for more mods will not be so simple or done as easily as the first 3 went.
I am looking at tweaked intake manifolds, $750. with a ported "Y" and some slight porting of the intakes. NW claims as much as 20whp for the complete rpm range. PERSONALLY I THINK A TRUE dyno TUNE WOULD DO MORE THAN THE INTAKES, AT THE LEAST IT WOULD ASSURE ME THAT THE 20WHP IS ACCURATE. Rob, the man at NW is a pro at dealing with the folks sending in their bowls and getting a few plants for entertainment again.
So now I am spending $750. for the ported "Y" and intakes for $750. and a 20whp return if all goes well.
Now looking back I should have stopped where I was making 400HP. I bet a dyno tune would have brought a nice quiet and smooth ride with a very good tune, one that Jerry said may add 12 x 20hp, smooth idling, quiet cruising silver Bullett.
POINT OF ALL THIS IS TAKE YOUR TIME, RESEARCH AND RESEARCH AGAIN, SEE WHAT TUNES THE BABY IS CRYING TO RUN WITH. mAYBE ALL OF THE RESEARCH YOU DO MAY HAVE YOU SELLING THE SLK320, AND BUYING A TUNING TOY, AN slk32 amg. The write ups are pretty best buy for what you get for under $10.k. time to call it quits, find a tuner someplace testing whatever work is done for what result. ASK, ASK other slk55 amg's with good numbers what they did to get there. Most at that level make more power than I am!

Hello again golden bear,

Any progress your end? Wanted to let you know that we just ordered a Speer pulley upgrade kit. Should be here in a couple of days.

We went for this one because a German friend of ours has it and highly recommended it. He has 10 cars. More than half of them are MBs!!!

So, really cheap. 169 Euros. Surprised at how cheap it was. We'll see how it goes. Probably would not have got it if he hadn't have recommended it and been running it for a long time.

They post worldwide, btw. And are open to offers on the ebay.de listing!

You need to give them the diameter of your original pulley - either 185mm or 193mm. Ours is 185mm.

Weather's still a bit cold here, so can't open her up too much once it's on to test it. But can let you know if you like. Got the new shocks planned for this weekend, so might not put it on just yet. (Can't wait though!)

See pics for screenshot of listing.

Hope this helps someone,
Jo

Seller on ebay is Chiptuning-team in Heilbronn, Germany.

Will try and add a link if I can remember how to do it.
