Thoughts on new Brake Discs (Rotors) for 2000 SLK230

Hi all,

So I've had my bargain SLK for 7 months now and I'm pleased to report that everything still appears to be working well. It's got 137,500 on the clock and feels a lot younger than it is.

Due to a bit of roughness on cold start and for 10 or so minutes afterwards I'm starting at the obvious place (I think), and I've ordered some new spark plugs from my local MB dealer, who advises they are now recommending the single cap iridium plugs for my SLK (is this the same everywhere?, just wondering) and I've also just ordered some Red Stuff brake pads however I'm now overthinking on which discs to buy.

Any comments on what brands you're using and liking at the moment would be appreciated. I've seen some older threads on the subject but maybe options need updating. I have a week until I need to decide and order some.

For the brake discs, I've been considering Brembo, Brembo Max or just sticking with the MB ones from the dealer or the equivalent OE Bosch.

What are you using?

Hey man, casey here

I've got a 2000 slk as we'll and I've driven many of my dad's newer mercedes (comparing those brakes to mine) and I have to say the oem brakes on my slk were revelry replaced and I faced the same questionas you, but my dad being the MB sales rep of southern us region told me to stick with oem and I have to say I do really like them as they are still really nice breaks and I'm not sure what a day of brembo would cost but I know it's a lot

Hi Casey, thanks for the reply.

The front MB discs from the dealer are 130 but on the Demon Tweeks website they are selling Brembo front discs for 55 so I'm really wondering if the MB ones are worth 80 more than the Brembo. I would be OK paying g the extra if I was sure it makes a difference but I really don't know know!

I think Brembo are a good brand too but is the MB one really worth more than double the cost of the Brembo?

I installed the brembo drilled & slotted disc about seven years ago along with ceramic pads and still have plenty of life left on the pads. I did not notice any difference between OEM rotors and the brembo rotors other than the price.

Oh the brembos are actually less? I never would have thought. I couldn't really give you a 100% answer, but livefree said that the Brembos felt very similar as if they were the same as OEM and a cheaper price. sounds like a good way to go and the Brembo name is big in automotives and trust worthy

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I'll probably go for the Brembo seeing as they're around a third of the price of the MB ones. I think Demon Tweeks have a sale on which is why the Brembo may be a bit cheaper than normal. Also these Brembo are not the slotted or drilled ones, they are the original replacement ones which are just plain vented discs. I probably do around 11,000 miles a year as it's a commute/getting to meetings car.

I've already purchased some Red Stuff pads to go with the new discs.

Now also planning to try and get my K40 soldered while I'm on annual leave next week. Any recommendations for indi's that can do it around the North London / Watford area appreciated. Going to check the price of a new one too.

Having done some more research and reading on discs such as Black Diamond and EBC as well as all my previous research I finally went for the Brembo Max discs which are just slotted rather than drilled. There are too many reports of cracking, splitting and the holes getting clogged up so for this particular car, drilled discs were out. I do too much mileage. If it was my weekend car I may have tried the drilled discs for the looks of them but Brembo seem to get great reviews regarding quality and reliability while still providing an increase in performance so we shall see. I should receive them mid-week.

Red Stuff pads have arrived but typically, having only read good reviews previously, I stumbled upon a tread having done a Google search and found a some less favourable comments. I would have liked to try some Akebono but could not easily locate any without trying to get them sent over from the US to the UK. I don't think there is a distributor here but I wascquite happy with the prospect of trying the Red Stuff until last night reading! Hoping I will be happier when they are fitted.

Considering upgrading brake hoses while I'm having the brake fluid changed (which was recommend 7months ago on inspection), and the discs and pads done. Does anyone have any recommendations for brands?
