After marker Filter instillation questions. 2000 R170 230K

hello its Casey and i have read and learned multiple things about a new filtration system and have decided that i want to install some Green Cone Filters on my 2000 slk 230K. it seams to me that the modification is extremely simple all you are basically doing is changing that big bulky box in the engine bay for some more attractive cones that also enhance the car. I brought up the idea to my farther and he does not understand how changing the square OEM box filter to Green cone filters could be more efficient.

here is a current picture of the left side of my engine bayimage.jpg

So i have two questions,
1. How could these open cones be more efficent then the enclosed square filter that is OEM.
2. What happens to the tube that runs the air into the OEM box below.
Here is a picture of what i am talking about Image-1.jpg

Becuase what i think would happen is if the cones are just sitting naked in the engine bay connected to the tubes there is no way it could be more efficent then the OEM setup.

Cool Filter Efficiency... Myth?

Having fitted a few of the cheap cone over the year, these are my opinions...

Essential just fitting a cone will make no real difference unless your existing filter is very dirty. However, it will make the sound greater and louder. So even if you're not increasing BHP, it'll sound as if you are.

The best way to improve the filters efficiency is to route a cold air supply to the filter. Many performance options come with a pipe taking the air from the lower front of the car to the filter, rather than hot air directly from the engine bay. Result, more efficient simply because cold air weighs more than hot air and therefore you get more oxygen into the manifold.

On top of that, if a filter is washable it can be reused many times, keeping costs down. Equally the reusable filter material tends to have less resistance so helps there with air flow too.

I shan't be changing the filter (except for a washable filter) on my 97 SLK as I don't need any extra power, and really like the quietness!!!

Have Fun..
