Ford-PAG-Mazda

I stopped by Ford-PAG-Mazda in Irvine this morning ~ 9:00 AM and spent about 20 min checking out the gathering of 1950's MB's in the large parking lot. It's an amazing place. It' Mazda's day so there was a huge crowd of screaming Wankel's (~12,000 RPM) . Ford & Mazda brought in a bunch of race cars but I didn't get a chance to see them.

What do you guy's think, in the near future meet up in Irvine, check out the cars, then go on some canyon runs? The weather is cooling off.

I'd drive down for a meet as long as we go somewhere. My wife isn't much into looking at static displays, but we love driving road trips.

Sounds great Tom. Let us know if you have a day/date in mind.
Would be great to see DesignoSLK, V8SLK, Cyberdrakon, 9MOON, ae98, etc..

Eddy, no particular date in mind, maybe the 11th or 18th of November would be cool. I was thinking of the Ortega Hwy to Elsinore. And from there, where ever the wind blows. Maybe Scott has some greener mountain roads up his way.

Well, what do you think about bypassing OC and head up your way. We got hills, You got mountains and closer for DesignoSLK.

Just throwing it out, anybody have other ideas. First figure out what to do, then set a date.

Good ideaTom. I'm willing to drive to the mountains at LA county since we met at Orange County last time. Anyone from LA with suggestions?

Appreciate the thought guys! I remember a nice woodsy/curvey/mountainy/creek drive my wife and I used to take in the Spitfire from Lancaster/Palmdale to Santa Clarita called Bouquet Canyon Rd. It's not super long though. And, it's kinda' far north for you OC guys.

Just exercising my memory grey matter.

...if you decide...we will come... (Not really the Field of Dreams effect, is it?)

What do you guys think, head off from Azusa up Hwy 39 up to the San Gabriel Reservoir. From there go east to Mt. Baldy. Driving time ~80 minutes, 35 miles. Return run to Glendora or east of La Verne. I have not been up in that area, so I don't know if there are places to stop for refreshments.

Here's DesignoSLK's suggestion, about 35 miles and 90 minutes. It's about 10 miles shorter to Palmdale than Azusa from Las Vegas.

Both will work for me, as I haven't been to either one. Which one is more scenic?

Pick a day (is Saturday preferable?)except Nov 11 (prior commitments), time (time envelope of 30 min. for assembly?), place to meet (anyone who knows the area better?), and then will follow the leader for the drive. If there's a specific scenic area or areas along the drive, we could line up for a group photo (actually group pix at beginning, middle and end of the meet). We could then assemble at a reasonable "refreshment" place either in the middle of the run or at the end.

This sounds like a good weekend meet for the R170's and R171's.

I took a cruse up to the San Gabriel reservoir this morning. Highway 39 is in excellent condition. There are plenty of turnout but most are dirt. I didn’t make it as far as I wanted because my car started squealing like a pig (note to self, don’t play in the dirt). Apparently I got dirt in the serpentine belt when I took the photos below and not knowing the problem I turned around and headed back home.

There is a Forest Service information center at the base of the mountain as you exit Azusa that can be a meeting place.

Looks great. I now have commitments made for the 11th and 18th of November. Does anyone want to shoot for a date and time? Dec. 2, Saturday, say 9 or 10am? Meet at the Forest Information Center on Asuza (highway 39)?
Tom, would you mind starting a thread as you've scouted the place out partially? Perhaps you have a specific address of the meeting place? or perhaps an X on the map? Thanks.

Eddy

Dirt causes squeal? I drove my SLK320 in Yellowstone on dirt roads that were probably a few miles long. I was a little ways behind another car but the SLK got COVERED in dust. I don't remember hearing any new noises after that.

Can you explain more?

p.s.
Thank goodness I put the top up just before hitting the road

Thats the question, The dirt is the consistency of talcum powder. The belt or bearing(s) started squealing within 2 minutes after I left the turn out. It stopped squealing by the time I got home. Hopefully it was a fluke.

Me too. Would someone care to start a new thread on a southwest meet for either nov 29 or dec 9 (poll perhaps)? Tom, what do you think?

DesignoSLK, Cyberdrakon, 9moon, ae98, there's also a forum member in Henderson, Nevada (I forgot his/her name), etc. interested?
