Other Hardtop Convertibles

I was out today and stopped by several of the local new car dealers. I saw a new Mazda Miata MX-5 convertible hardtop convertible. It looks real nice, MSRP was $26,995. They advertise travel time up or down is 12 seconds, impressive. Only complaint is the hardtop is the same shape as the convertible and looks like a removable hardtop. Overall great job by Mazda, great price for what is sure to be a fun car. I also saw VW EOS, four seat hardtop convertible. Not a very attractive vehicle. MSRP is about $36,300. Too much for an unattractive VW. One neat aspects of the EOS retractable hardtop, the front half is tinted glass with a sliding shade. I'm curious, how, why, has Volvo, Mazda, and even VW beaten BMW, Porsche, GM Corvette, and other more exotic cars to the market with convertible hardtops? Although biased, MB has the most attractive hardtop convertibles. The tops, look more like hardtops, than retractable hardtops. When will other than S class MBs get hardtop convertibles?

My neighbor owns a Pontiac G6 hard top convertible coupe. It's a two piece top that operates similar to MB. More room in the rear seats and the trunk compared to the Volvo.

I thought the EOS looks good in pics but I haven't seen it in metal so, can't comment. I haven't seen any other hardtop except the G6, which is ugly. Porsche and MB came up with the retractable hardtop technology and has rights to it. Porsche hasn't use it b/c of the added weight. Porsche fanatics don't care for a hardtop unless it's carbo fiber and as light as the canvas top. Porsche enthusiast are hardcore, some of those guys cancelled their GT3 b/c it came with a sunroof.

I cancelled my Caymen S because it DIDN'T have one! I'm not running a $5 million compation car for Bremen. Besides, life is too short, I can have a closed lid on my coffin. Until that time I intend to be introduced to Mr. Melanoma.

I believe only the Miata is worth talking about. The Eos and G6 are front-wheel-drive, and face it, they are not as much fun as rear wheel drive. Also FWD has a 300 HP limit and some of you guys look like that's where you like to start!

At the Drive-Thru at the McDonalds in the hood (Liberty City, Miami) they thought my SLK was a G6. Damn, even the riff-raff are getting jaded in this town!

I knew I left out the Pontiac G6 after I posted. Surely, at some point, new technology will dictate retractable hard tops and and old rag tops will be a thing of the past. It's just a matter of time.

The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 skyliner hard top convertible is a classic.

Have you written to Porsche, like most companies if you complain with your pocket book, they will listen.

...being folliclly challenged myself, my wife is ALWAYS on me about wearing a hat. I suppose it's something to be concerned about living here in Vegas where the sun is rarely not out, but I agree with you.

That is a terrible looking car.

Before I bought the SLK, I had thoughts of getting back to Europe to work and buying a Peugeot 307CC. Apart from the SLK, the 307CC has the most natural looking convertible top. Too bad it's not available here in the States. The Miata is OK, if I hadn't got the SLK first, I might have considered it except it's fit and finish looks less attractive with the top down. IMO

Classy looking car, very unique look. But not a retractable hardtop. They do offer a regular convertible soft top.

It's a soft top, you would think it's a hardtop b/c it was based on the old r170 platform. The interior is indeed very plasticy, they were trying to sell this used one for $26K which is a bargain.

I'd consider one if...as mentioned...it had the hardtop.

And @ 135hp? It's also very reminiscent of the old Mercury Capri with it's fit and finish.
