Chicky/Jeff ... have been doing a bunch of searches and research on this iPhone/JPG/PNG thing. I use both JPG and PNG on my personal website -- PNG format allows transparent areas (great for things like logos) and it can be a lossless format for best quality graphics that may need further manipulation without loosing quality each time; JPG can't have see-through areas and are always compressed to some degree, so quality can vary and gets worse every time one edits a JPG and stores it.
Anyway, back to iPhones and iOS... Comes down to iOS supports both JPG and PNG internally and apps written for iOS can output either type. I can find references to that on developer sites back to 2008 timeframe. I have not found there to be a hardware dependence on which is used -- I suspect it is application based, e.g. if I take a picture using the Apple Camera app, it is always JPG using iOS 6 on my iPhone5 and my iPad 3. It's always saved as JPG if I do a screen capture on both devices. If I use iOS Safari to look at either a JPG or PNG file on a website and then use the iOS function in Safari to save that image into my photo library on the iOS device, it gets saved as a JPG file -- even if the source up on the website was a PNG (I tried it).
...so, Jeff, what you are proposing is what Chicky needs to do. If her iOS app is outputting PNG and she needs it to be in JPG, she has to convert it some way in the app that is making that picture in the first place or after-the-fact with a 99-cent to $1.99 conversion app -- there seem to be a bunch of those out there. Personally, I do all my conversions on my Mac -- it's a lot easier. :-)
