Have any of our member pilots experienced this?

Pilot aborts landing after runway 'disappears'

A incredibly heavy rainfall burst forces the pilot of this passenger jet plane to abandon the landing at the very last second when he completely loses visibility. Thankfully the pilot was skilled enough to pull up safely and circle around until the storm cleared enough for him to land safely. The Huffington Post writes of the video, "per the YouTube description, the video was filmed by someone in the plane's jump seat who spotted the rain ahead of time. The pilots ultimately initiated a 'go-around procedure,' an aerial maneuver where the aircraft rapidly climbs back into a holding pattern to attempt landing at a later time." Writes Douglesso, the uploader, on YouTube: "Ultimately, we had plenty of fuel on board and we where [sic] given radar vectors back for another approach. In just 15 minutes the rain had passed and the sun was coming out."

I've done my share of go arounds in the military and the airlines. In today's world, take the comment about there being "lots of fuel" with a grain of salt...fuel costs money and "tankering" (carrying extra) costs as well (you burn fuel to carry fuel...think of it as cargo).

A funnier version in my military days...
We were deploying to Puerto Rico and were dropping of some stores; we'd brought along the CO to make nice with the local USN Commander. I had a new copilot on the crew, and thought what a great opportunity for him to show his stuff to the CO... I mean it was essentially a ferry flight, no operations, take-off, cruise and land. We get to PR shoot a PAR (precision approach radar) to the runway, which takes you to 1/2 a mile and 200ft (Canuck limits; the USN will control you to 100' and a 1/4mile). So all he has to do is land... Well as in Jeffs video a squall comes across the field as he starts to flare. We float...and float...he's trying to grease it on...and we float..now mid-field...ohforkrisesakes... I bark at him "Go Around!" He adds a bit of power, so we're definitely not landing, but we sure as sugar aren't going around either. "I have control!" Argh. Not so impressive....

FYI the screen you seen in front of the pilot is called a Heads Up Guidance System - it will show him all his flight data, navigation/approach info, as well as a synthetic view of the runway. Depending on certification (of the aircraft and crew) you can land zero zero (zero ceiling and zero visibility).

...and from my commercial experience... autoland is still black magic to me LOL.

We autolanded with no problem (what is refered to as "Cat3") and easily had the runway at about 50ft, but on the roll out we went to visibility zero. The system is set up to keep you on the centerline even on the roll out - one of the checks is to turn off the autopilot so you can leave the runway! You almost needed a white cane to find our way to the gate; what would normally take 5-6mins took us over 30mins.
