I would have just kept my 1998 E320 as it was running fine with about 65K miles on it.

Prior to the SLK, I was looking at the Audi TT convertible. Once I checked the SLK, there was no comparison. Even now, when I see an Audi TT, "what was I thinking"? My current plans are to replace the current SLK with a 2008 version.

I was looking at all the roadsters, but I would have gone for a Boxster. My wife probably would have gone for a Miata, but I didn't take her for a test drive in the Boxster, so she might have changed her mind.

Thank goodness there was the SLK!

i highly considered a TT quattro sport, a bmw z4 3.olitre and a boxster. boxster was my favourite i have to say but to expensive once kitted out, merc was most comfortable and best value for money when specced up, plus the hard top is a great selling point for when winter sets in.

if i couldnt buy the slk, i would have bought an R32 VW mk5 golf. my bro has one and my god do they sound amazing and totally understated. great 4 wheel drive quick car. but gimme my slk anyday!

I also considered the Shelby GT500 convertible, Solstice GXP (the 260hp turbo version), and Audi TT.

Actually, I wasn't looking for a car, just purchased my nissan murano as a daily driver, still had the e36 m3 but did not drive it at all. My brother was driving it most of the time. I went with my dad to look at a S-Class, he wanted a S55 AMG in silver. When we got there he was talking with the salesman about it, I wonder around the showroom floor and notice a nicely equiped CLK500 cabriolet. Sat in it, looks luxurious both inside and out but did not drive it.

I was picturing myself in a convertible then. Almost brought it, but talked to the salesman about it and he was honest enough to say it's not a sports car but a luxury cruiser, coming from a M3, I still wanted something sporty, he said to wait for the new SLK, he said it was fast, handles well, and availabe in 6sp MT. I was convinced, logon to mb forums and did my research. And my dad ended up buying a black S500 4matic on the showroom floor. The salesman convince him that 4matic is needed in Colorado.

I saw a 997 C2S with the GT3 aero kit at the Porsche dealer the other day and seriously wanted to trade in my SLK for it. Pictures doesn't do it justice, it's a beauty in reality. The brakes, the aero kit and the interior is stunning. The price tag was too, at $105,400, only $600 cheaper than a base GT3 ($106,000). Way over price and common sense came just in time and decided it's not worth it.

997 TPC turbo C4S
981 Boxster S
06' SLK 350, Iridium/Ash all pkgs. 6-spd, 19" DCR. (Gone but not forgotten)

Ah I don't really care about write-ups. I've always been a big fan of the S3 and had a couple of test drives and it's a great car. If they even sold them in the US, I would have bought one ages ago.

Ynot the 997 is an awesome car, I spotted one at the track back in june. I was also drooling at porcshe's late last year, but it's lack of the drop top and silly optional prices quickly drops of the interest level..

I knew I got a shot of it..

i was thinking either Cayman, Saturn sky redline, bmw z4M. In the end the cayman came out to too much money the way i wanted it outfitted, the saturn sky was still a saturn (and i refused to pay over sticker AND put deposit to order one) and the z4m coupe wasn't out yet.

I also briefly looked at a Z4 3.0i but it didn't do anything for me, I don't mind the look, the fact they had a hard time selling it told me if I didn't like it after a year, I'll be giving it away for free when I try to sell it.

Saturn sky did interest me in the beginning but at $4K over MSRP and it's hard to find one at MSRP, it's close to $30K, way over price for a manual top 177hp roadster. By the same time next year, it'll be more than just another Saturn on the road. The manual top will not work well with our weather which changes as you enter different counties that explains why I see sky's with the top up 90% of the time.

what are these saturn skies? never heard of them before...obvioulsy ourely for the american market?!?
Z4's not sell well in USA? that's strange as our European versions facelifted earlier this year are all actually set up to suit the american market and not European, as they sell so well in Europe already. The Z4 is now built in America!

997 turbo...good lord i love these. I had the opportunity to test drive the enw one on a local track and I loved it, but to expensive for me yet. I also drove the Cayman S and it was mind blowing fun! I own a caterham kit car and I swear that Cayman could keep up with it around the track, simply due to its handling!!!

I'd probably have bought a new E65. I really liked my former E55 but love the SLK55 more.

We decided we needed to get rid of the Fiat Punto and I was considering a new golf. Then the wife said she'd like a convertible, so i looked into a few models, then thought i'd like a sportier car (ok, i wanted 2 seater!!!), looked at chrysler crossfire, z4 and low-end porsche before finally seeing the light and buying an slk.

Actually Europe is supposed to get a version called the Opel GT, or something like that.

....so I wanted anything that wouldn't break down... and wouldn't cost me Ł1800 a year to service.

Job done!
