2020 Corvette Has First Crash In The Mountains, Damage Is Heavy

It looks like the C8 Corvette that crashed was part of a group travelling through the Yosemite Natural Park in California.

Judging by what we can see in the image we have here, the 'Vette collided with the white SUV (this looks like a Ford Explorer). This scenario matches witness reports stating that "the Corvette C8 took the wheel off an SUV [it looks like we're talking about the driver's side rear wheel] heading in the opposite direction around a turn. This particular C8 was part of the Corvette Caravan heading up to Yosemite..." - hat tip to the Corvette_Nut member of the Corvette Forum for the image and details of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette accident.

As for the consequences of the crash, the state of the drivers and any potential passengers is unknown at the moment.

When it comes to the vehicle damage, both the C8 Corvette and the SUV seem to have been seriously affected by the accident. For one thing, the airbags on both vehicles seem to have been deployed. In fact, this Chevy could be totaled. Nevertheless, despite this appearing to be a heavy accident, it looks like the safety cell of the Chevrolet Corvette held its shape well.

We're obviously looking at a no-visibility corner here, but it's not clear which vehicle crossed the double yellow line, entering the other car's lane.
Note that this was not a customer car

Customer deliveries for the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette have yet to kick off, which means we're dealing with a manufacturer vehicle. Of course, the car could've always been driven by a journalist.

We'll return with updates on the matter if and when these become available. Meanwhile, here's to hoping that all those involved in the accident managed to walk away unharmed.

Dimes to donuts that SUV crossed the line. The corvette looks to have been on the inside lane of the curve, and the vast majority of the time (in my experience) SUV drivers on the outside lane of a bend 'cut the corner' because they are taking the turn too fast for their behemoth land yacht. Hell, not just SUV drivers but most drivers in general tend to cut the curve in the outside lane, not swing wide in the inside lane. But it is far worse with SUV drivers IME.

Make me eat an SUV if I am wrong. But I bet I am right. I absolutely hate SUV drivers (in general, not all of them obv) in the twisties.

It seems from this description that perhaps the vette crossed the line since the damage to the SUV was to the left rear wheel area.

"The Corvette C8 took the wheel off an SUV [it looks like we're talking about the driver's rear wheel] going in the opposite direction to a curve," explained Corvette_Nut, user of the forum. "This particular C8 was part of the Corvette Caravan heading for Yosemite …"

Agree, probably the 'vette. I used to race Corvettes (SCCA, IMSA) and think 495 hp in a street car is silly. Are a few tight blind curves around here and I always hug the curb side in either direction. See people cross the center particularly late in the curve all of the time.

ps O'town is the rental capital of the world and many are from the UK/OZ/Japan whose expert reactions are rong.
