Alfa's slide worsens in Europe

Alfa Romeo is in trouble. The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles premium brand was outsold by the Tesla Model 3 in Europe during the first half 37,476 to 29,059. A positive way to spin this is by saying it's an indication that car buyers in Europe are warming to electric cars.

Another glance at the sales chart, which shows Alfa's six-month sales are down 42 percent compared with the same period last year, provides even more bad news. Alfa was also outsold by its one-model, one-market sister brand, Lancia, which managed to deliver 34,693 Ypsilons through June in Italy.

In addition, Alfa was overtaken during the first half by Jaguar and Porsche while even Toyota premium brand Lexus, which sold 27,267 vehicles in the half, is a threat to pass the Italian marque.

The decline at Alfa has been rapid as it sold more than 120,000 vehicles globally last year largely because of strong demand in the U.S. and China. Unfortunately, Alfa U.S. sales were down 26 percent during the half and the overall China market’s decline is not helping.

July's European sales figures were even less encouraging, with Alfa's deliveries dropping by 56 percent in Italy, 66 percent in France and 70 percent in Spain.

It's pretty but that's about it. A dated design with a 4 cyl engine when the competition has 6s and 8s does not make sense.

One of the cars I looked at when I found my'55 was the newly introduced 124 Spyder. Manual soft top that I could put up in 4-5 seconds while sitting down was nice.

One thing that really had me thinking though was the fact there was only 1 engine version for all models of the 124, including the Abarth. I think that one got a tiny boost in HP but it may as well have not been there.

It was fun rowing that boat but the lack of power/same engine in all models was disappointing. I think I've seen one 124 on the road in the 4 years since.

Sad you don,t see more on the road it is a great car to be tuned.I guess the 2 Seater Wave is over.

Let’s quickly go over the modifications on my Abarth 124. Then we’ll find out how much of a difference these basic bolt-on’s could make on this little 1.4L engine and where it ranks on our Fast List.

Engine modifications on the Abarth 124:
- EC Phase 2 Tune
- EC V4 Intake
- EC Upgraded Intercooler
- Goodwin Racing Full Non-Resonated Cat-Back Exhaust
- GFB DV+

AA, RAC, Greenflag et al must be breathing a sigh of relief.
It will leave them more facilities to deal with the rest of the vehicles on the road.

Abarth is a looker. Checked one out a few month back.
Just curiosity. 55 stays with me.

Looks like the 4C is holding pretty steady in the used car market.
