Ethan tells WSB-TV 2 Atlanta that he took Chanler out to dinner and then was planning to take her back to her parents’ place in Suwannee, where he would pop the question. For that purpose, he had purchased a gorgeous and sizeable diamond ring, which he left inside his bag in the car, thinking it was safe there.
Then, as he and Chanler were having dinner, someone broke into their car. The report notes that another car break-in took place in the area and that there is surveillance video from both scenes. The suspect is seen only in one of the videos, but his dark-colored Audi is visible in both.
After dinner, Ethan and Chanler came back to the car, which they had parked at a paid parking spot. The first thing they saw was the smashed window, and Ethan immediately realized what it meant.
“She walked up and was, like, ‘What's wrong? It's just a window. They just took your bag. We can get all that back.’ I was, like, ‘No you don't understand’,” he tells the media outlet. “The police came and we did all that and once we got it sorted out, I told her I'm still going to do it.”
So, after they were done with the police, they continued as planned: they went to her parents’ house, where Ethan got a replacement ring which he used when he got down on one knee. She said yes, of course.
The good news – and the lesson the couple hopes others will take from their mishap – is that Ethan had just had the diamond ring insured about 2 hours before the break-in. He still hopes police will find it and bring it back to him, but if they don’t, he finds consolation in knowing he will get his money back.
