Dodge models top list of most-stolen vehicles, study says

The Dodge Charger Hemi and Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat are the two vehicles most likely to be stolen, according to a recent study by the Highway Loss Data Institute.

The vehicles, along with the Infiniti Q50, have claim rates for whole-vehicle theft that are more than five times the average for 2016-18 models.

Nearly all of the top 20 most-stolen models and variants have large engines or are luxury vehicles or pickups, according to the report.

"The models most likely to be stolen tend to be powerful, pricey or pickups, but vehicle theft is also a crime of opportunity," Matt Moore, the institute's senior vice president, said in a statement. "Better security features on all vehicles would be the best way to address the problem."

Leading the least-stolen list is the BMW 3-series four-door sedan, followed by Tesla's Model S and Model X, according to HLDI. The low rate of theft for the Tesla models "may be related to the fact that, as electric vehicles, they are usually parked in garages or close to a house to be near a power supply," the statement said.

An institute report last year showed electric vehicles from several manufacturers have lower theft claim rates than comparable vehicles.

The Cadillac Escalade, which previously "dominated" the institute's most-stolen rankings, didn't make the list for the recent study.

"Part of the reason is that the large luxury SUV now has more competition in that category, including from the Infiniti QX80 and the Land Rover Range Rover, vehicles that are now among the most stolen," the statement said. Cadillac also added more anti-theft features starting with the 2015 model year, the institute said.

HLDI, an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, examined claims per insured vehicle year to compare the relative risk of each vehicle. An insured vehicle year is one vehicle insured for one year.

I heard somewhere that the Ford Mustang tops the list of most-'killed' vehicles in Florida.

Usually it's very common cars because crash parts. More cars on the road, more crash part needed. Camry used to top the list. These Dodge thefts must be joy riders. Who'd want a Dodge?

Yeah, no idea how this list was compiled. Most stolen car in the US are 20-year old Honda Civics because they get chopped up for parts. There aren't enough of those Hellcats in the country for it to become "most stolen car".

The metric used here is "relative claim frequency" which isn't explained anywhere, but I suspect involves number of thefts per insured vehicle year, normalized somehow. This would mean a relatively rare car that nonetheless gets stolen regularly would score very high.
