Drunk Canadian Acts Responsibly and Parks Car, Finds It Stolen

So much for being rewarded for acting responsibly: a man from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, became the victim of car thieves after parking his car because he was too drunk to drive.

The incident happened last Friday, after the man was out on the town, The Buffalo News reports. At about 10 o’clock on Friday night, he decided he was too drunk to drive, so he parked his 2011 Chevrolet Traverse in a neighborhood he deemed safe.

“The victim, a 73rd Street resident, told police that he parked the vehicle in the 600 block of 20th Street around 10 p.m. Friday and slept at a friend's house, due to his condition,” the report notes. “When he returned for the vehicle around 6 a.m. Saturday, he discovered it missing.”

The same publication says that police are looking at a string of car thefts in the area: also on Friday, a 2003 Jeep was reported stolen after the owner left the keys inside the vehicle and went indoors for a couple of hours. He figured no one would steal his car from his property in the little time he would be inside, and he was wrong.

While the Chevy owner did nothing wrong to encourage the thieves to take his car, police repeatedly warn car owners not to leave the keys in the ignition or the doors of the vehicle unlocked, if only for a few minutes. There is a way to deter car thieves from targeting your vehicle and that includes making sure you remove all valuables from sight, lock the doors, shut off the engine and take the keys with you.

As for the poor Chevy owner, props to him for being responsible and not driving drunk. His mishap is best known as the bad luck of the guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He decided he was too drunk to drive, so he parked his car …. If he was too drunk to drive, why didn't he leave it where it was, & not drive it to a "safe" area? Driving drunk is driving drunk. Matters not if it is a block or 15 miles.
