Florida man tries to steal 26 cars from Pasco jail parking lot, just after being released
The man was seen attempting to enter the vehicles at the Land O’ Lakes jail, deputies say.
Another day, another extraordinary Pasco man story.
Dennis Libonati, 68, of Homosassa, was released from the Land O' Lakes Detention Center in Pasco County, Florida on Monday after he was sentenced on a misdemeanor battery charge to 265 days of probation and anger management classes earlier that day, according to The Smoking Gun. Libonati had reportedly been held in jail since his arrest in mid-March.
At around 10:30 p.m. that evening, authorities responded to a "complaint of a suspicious person in the parking lot of the LOL [Land O' Lakes] Detention facility," according to a criminal complaint. Upon their arrival, police found Libonati located in an area of jail property restricted to officials use only.
Video surveillance of the parking lot showed the defendant "attempting to enter 26 vehicles in the common parking area by pulling on door handles," but "all vehicles were locked so entry was not made," the complaint said, adding that two sheriff's office vehicles — a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Kawasaki Mule ATV — were among those he attempted to break into and steal.
"The defendant accessed the bed of the pickup truck by partially removing a cover over the top," the complaint said. "The video also showed the defendant spending several minutes at the ATV."
During questioning, Libonati admitted to officers that he had tried to break into "all the aforementioned vehicles with the intent to steal one to use for transportation," according to police. He also admitted he had attempted to "hot wire" the ATV before authorities confronted him.
