Tyre art: cool or not cool?

Way back in the middle of the last century when I was a kid, I saw plenty of flash cars about like Jensens, TR's, MG's etc not to mention Zodiacs and Zephyrs. One of the things that sticks in my mind was picking out the lettering on the tyres in white. Now as I see it, this would be perfectly acceptable if one had a set of.. for example Pirelli Scorpions or Bridgstones or maybe even Michelins but maybe not so good with Kwikfit budgets.

So the question is: Back in the 60's/70's this was considered cool. Is it still or is it a pretentious faux pas nowadays?

Saw a bunch of American muscle cars with Cragar wheels surrounded by B F Goodrich radial TA's (raised white letters, of course) tonight at the local car show! I had them on my '76 Camaro, they looked great!

I'd have a hard time putting them on something today.

It seems that all my life tyre companies have been promising full coloured tyres but they never materialise.
Recently the Vauxhaul coupe show car had red ones.
But they never appear on the market, maybe because it is the answer to a question no one asked
and also tyre chemistry is not compatible.
Sure they can be coloured but maybe grip, tyre life, operating temperature range etc all go out the window.

As for raised letters being white, looks fine but hard to keep looking good as people kerb their tyres.
Car parts shops used to sell white paint pens for this.

OK with me....

I just put a new set of RWL (Raised White Letters) tires on my car. But it was the Corvette not the SLK.

Plan B.
Keep driving through fresh road markings.

Costs a fortune in fuel and paint correction though.

I had white walls on my all my XKs and they were pricey compared to black walls or white lettered tires. Then at some point in time (I want to say late 80s-early 90s), the white walls dropped in price and the white letter tires were the pricy option.

Never cared for the white lettered tires; got headaches trying to read them as the car drove by. Hell to park to get the name horizontal.

White walls looked good on wire wheels. My XK 150 back in the days.
