Drivers will soon find it harder to ignore speed limits - as "intelligent speed assistance" systems will become compulsory by 2022.

Hold on to those SLK/Cs.
They may be the last of a kind for yet another reason.

Mine was installed 42 years ago. What is interesting is when my Lady is driving, she drives like a bat out of hell, giving La Bęte a good, hard workout. Before I can make a comment, she looks at me and says "Don't drive like I do."

The next step will be 'intent'.
If you hit the gas a signal will register your intent to speed.

It is not speeding per say, but overtaking that is my concern.

You're stuck behind a vehicle for miles down a twist road.
Straight comes up and you prepare an overtake, only for the numpty to pick up speed
because they do not want you to go past.
For a moment, the ability to exceed the limit gets the job done.

The next step will be a reduction in signed limits.
Currently, you get the posted limit and then reminders.

Side thought. You know me and my views on tech.
Sound principles are often wasted by poor execution of hardware/software.
So, you speed, because the system did not pick up on a signed limit
& you are now in the habit of knowing the sytem would never let you speed.
Who is at fault?
The law will say driver.

Not to mention what if there is an emergency. I drove 110mph all the way to the emergency vet hospital because my dog was in anaphylactic shock with her throat closing up. Ten more minutes she would have been dead. Speed limiter would have killed my dog.

To heck with that nonsense!

But had you been involved in an accident at that speed you may well have killed your dog, yourself and, potentially, others.
Just saying..........

I was on the highway with no traffic. I will risk my life for my dog. She definitely would have died, vet even said I was lucky I got her there when I did.

At least I had a reason for driving that speed. Many stories cant say the same.

Well Northern Territory in Australia has highways with no limits still.

Very little traffic. But.

But,
It has wandering Kangaroos, cattle, wild Camels by the tens of thousands, Emus, & Dingos. Any of which, will ruin one’s day if in front when doing Warp speed. They are camouflaged and can step out onto the road in an instant from their hiding spot in the scrub.
No amount of skill will avoid that impact.

Race tracks are much more fun places to drive fast, no signs, no intersections, no animals nor obstructions.

If one doesn’t want speed limits but want speed thrills go racing, go sailing, go flying, go skydiving or go skiing. And drive the SLK to get there.

I think this is the thin end of a big wedge, as the government tries to get the roads safe for widespread introduction for autonomous vehicles.

Dont worry, our cars will be priced off the road when it suits the government to get rid of them.

Fortunatly not in my lifetime

Exclamation

At the moment it doesn't work.
My car is fitted with traffic sign recognition but only is correct half the time. It will pick up signs off to the side and misses others. It also displays signs that aren't there.
I believe it also requires the new European position system that the EU said the UK can not have access to if we leave, even though we have spent millions helping to develop it.

Galileo is the European global satellite-based navigation system. Galileo is Europe's Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), providing improved positioning and timing information with significant positive implications for many European services and users

Cheers Russ
