2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 Coupe: Why? Just ... Why?

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 Coupe; Cars.com photos by Christian Lantry
Honestly, I don't get it. I don't mean the name; calling the 2020 GLC300 Coupe a "coupe" makes about as much sense as calling any four-door vehicle a coupe, in my opinion. No, what I don't understand is why anyone would want this thing. The formula doesn't make sense: Take a perfectly good Mercedes-Benz GLC300 SUV, which has been thoroughly updated for the latest model year, take away all the utility of having a hatchback cargo area, keep the high-riding SUV stance, cut the backseat headroom and charge more money. Debuting at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, it's Mercedes' answer to the BMW X4, itself an answer to a question nobody asked.

Will they do a Convertible too? Like Nissan did?

The Hatchback is dead,,,, long live the four door Coupe.

How can a SUV be a Coupe, Coupes where things people took to the racetrack.
What’s next, a SUV Coupe Wagon Convertible?
Oh no, I just remembered that GM Escalade wagon with the sliding roof over the rear load area... did they sell 2000 or 3000 of them?

Beats me. I have never understood why on earth anyone would want an SUV to begin with. An SUV shorn of all the supposed benefits of SUVs is simply incomprehensible.

Hey my road/GT car is a Catera Touring Sedan Coupe. Thought about a CLK but you can reach the rear seat in those, can't in the caddy except from the trunk (four foot boxed shop light just keeps going in and in and in and the pedestrians stare...)

Guess I am oldfashioned but to me a coupe is a two-door with a lot of luggage space. But then the marketeers are allowed to do anything they want.

Ha! Spoken like a true city dweller . I love my SLK, but if you have a family it's just a toy or like me it's a commuter vehicle to work where you live. Literally. I work in Crystal City. My Expedition is the family truxster and it is a fantastic vehicle in every way. Dinner, kids games, camping? It can do it all in style and loads of comfort.
Long live the SUV If you don't like SUVs the first one will probably make you puke. The second one is mine and just might turn into the first one. It's like a Tonka truck, but for men.

Lol! We really are Country Mouse and City Mouse --I live close to Crystal City.

I really like your truxter -- cool machinery is what I am into. I don't dislike SUVs, I just find them alien -- when I was growing up, cars were supposed to be low and SUVs did not exist. Peoples' tastes have changed. There's a Starbucks on every corner and nary a soda fountain.

I'm not sure 'Sport Utility' is appropriate for any vehicle. My Grand Cherokee has a 5.7 liter Hemi but I would hardly characterize it as sporty. The Overland Summit edition has just about every option that can be bolted on which makes it as sporty as a school bus. It has a trailering package which lends to its utility side but at the same time it has a 'sport' setting on the trans selector. Kind of schizophrenic in a way. Its much more utility than sporty. Its been my experience that something built to do all things won't do anything well.

I grew up with the original sport-ute: International Travelall. At the time everyone thought it was just a 4-door pickup with a camper shell, when it was really a massive station wagon. Parents put a mattress in the back and my brother and sister would ride back there watching hot wheels cars roll around. Nothing "trendy" about a Travelall.

I have a place in Alexandria (Kingstown) that I stay at during the week. The rest of the time I live down towards Colonial Williamsburg.
Yes, growing up it was trucks and cars and general stores for me. I really love the SUV for my lifestyle though. It's a 3/4 ton truck with a permanent cap on it and much more comfortable. I tow my 69 Camaro in my enclosed trailer sometimes and the Expy is a God send. Especially with the family.

I understand why people like SUVs. I hate them, but I get it.

What I DONT get is why anyone would want an SUV with no hatchback, hence way less cargo room, and less head space in the rear seat. It completely defeats the purpose of having a dang SUV. Might as well buy a sedan.

Like the truxster, I have a GX470 that that’s been great but will be sold to get a midsize pickup

We were an SUV + sedan-loving family way back when the kids were younger. SUVs truly made life lots more easier for families with young kids. We first had a Toyota Sequioa which we sold to buy a Lexus LX470... and one day when my oldest turned 16, we bought her an Audi A4 and sold the Lexus, and that has been the end of SUVs for us. That was 10 years ago now. Personally, I don't hate them, but would never buy one again. They did their job in my life when I needed them to...

MB is making a boatload of cash selling SUVs, but when they decide to do a hybrid SUV+wagon into a "Coupe" like this GLC, it is a travesty... and I sure hope the market makes them pay for such an abomination. No, it won't become trendy, I believe, rather it will be an outlier, sticking out like a sore thumb.... and a mistake MB will move on from sooner rather than later.

It's not always about cargo space for some folks. It could be they like the ground clearance. A lot of people live on dirt roads etc where cars aren't always practical. SUVs are better in the snow if they're all wheel or four wheel drive also.

There is the well known trend where people like to sit high and have a good view of the traffic ahead.

I have a theory that people increasingly like to just slide into their seat, not drop down and climb out, and not climb up in either.
Car manufacturers initially went for the big SUVs and seemed genuinely surprised that the medium sized ones had such good sales growth. RAV4, CR-V, X-Trail etc. Particularly in Europe and Australia.

These days, in the SLK, I am looking up at the door handles of the SUVs in the next lane, and the tops of the tyres are above me too. A conspicuous colour is part on my safety strategy......

If everyone is driving SUVs then those that have to be different are going to want the GLC coupe I guess.

Possibly people who don't like the looks of an SUV, but want the ease of entry and exit they offer. If they're offering the GLC300 with 4WD, that may also be a reason for folks who don't like SUV's but live where snow is an issue.

I cringe at them calling it a coupe, but then I still cringe at them calling the SLK (and all their other two seater convertibles build in the last 50+ years) roadsters.

Still waiting for Chrysler to come out, ( they hinted at this with the new Pacifica), with a 4 wheel drive 700 hp (from the Demon Challenger) minivan.
Talk about sport and utility
Back hatch
sliding side doors
entertainment center...to catch your children's attention away from the 140 MPH your doing
while also hauling cinder blocks in the back
Marketing guys will call it a Coupe Plus

Put a 700hp motor in it and it will still be a mini van...
