Manual vs Auto

Auto vs Manual
Or old man’s car vs proper drivers car. Not really (maybe) but I thought you should know where my loyalties lie.

Obviously given that Mercedes seems to be dropping its manual options, its clear the auto wins by sales. The nature of our congested urban roads makes a manual a nightmare – fair enough, but not the natural habitat of a sports car. Manuals are old school where auto’s are being promoted as the future – what ever. Manuals need greater skills to drive. Manual boxes are being outperformed by autos in drag type races.
I think the auto wins! NO not at all. This forum is testament to frustrations with auto’s being in the wrong gear, predictive learning on your driving style. A manual is always in the gear you want, it will never change gear on a bend near the edge throwing the balance of the car. The countless autobox settings and interference testify to the patches to make it barely acceptable. The complexity of the thing makes failure an expensive proposition. Be careful when you tow an auto and don’t think you will ever bump start it. Finally its only a manual if it has a clutch, paddle changes don’t count – they just don’t.
OK I think that’s controversial enough. What do you think and if you feel I have expressed it a bit hard how would you feel if Mercedes started to drop the auto option on their new cars.

Simple answer.
No 55 in the range, so MB can do what the hell they like.
I won't be buying.

Had many manual and quite a few auto.
To be at the edge of driving I feel manual is the answer.
However, I love auto with paddles.
The 55 system makes progress.
It commutes, it tracks, it cruises and it tours.

I see nothing that I'd replace it with, at any price.
If it didn't exist, I might be tempted by the v6 170,
or perhaps a 230 with enhancements.

We checked out the CLK just a short while back.
It's ok, but no hair standing up feel.

Once you get passed the 350 there are no more manual boxes.

Would love a manual 32 AMG but they do not exist, same as the 55's.

Getting used to the autobox now, not missing my manual as much.

If it weren't for the lack of a manual, I'd have a 55 instead of my 350. I do love my 350 though... I have to laugh when I hear of a manual referred to as a millennial security system. I taught my oldest son to drive a stick and now he loves them. He has a 5 speed in his Mustang GT that we built together. I drive in to D.C. three times per week. The stick doesn't bother me, but I can definitely see why in traffic someone would prefer an auto.

Interesting, there are more manual options around than I thought - well done MB but no AMG manual - why not? Something I missed was the diesel options - yeah sure make them automatic, why - well my next thread.

Petrol vs Diesel
Or proper sports car vs lorry just kidding (maybe) but I thought you should no where my loyalties lie.

Whoops - must stay up to date vs electric

55 has paddle shifters and also a 'manual' 'slap stick' mode
only thing missing is something for your left foot to do
