Man Takes Mustang For Brake Inspection, Catches Mechanic Doing Donuts in It

Gotta love a good test drive.

A California man spent $200 on a camera that he mounted on the rear-view mirror of his red Mustang, and he’s now saying it’s the best use he could have put to that money

Michael Burke from Elk Grove, California, says his Mustang is his “baby.” He recently took it for a brake inspection at a local tire shop and was shocked to see a mechanic meant to perform the inspection doing donuts in it. “Livid” doesn’t even begin to describe how he felt, he tells KRCA.

The camera is visible inside the car, but the mechanic must have thought it stopped recording when he got in. That’s because its screen goes black after about 3 minutes, Burke explains for the media outlet.

However, he probably wouldn’t have thought to check the footage had he not noticed something off when the mechanic brought his Mustang back from the inspection. “I got my keys. I got back in my car and noticed all the stuff in my car was, like, crammed over on one side, like, off the seat and everything,” he says.

When he got home, he checked the video and saw the car being driven to an empty parking lot, where the mechanic did donuts with it. Tire marks on the asphalt indicated that this spot had been used before to this end. “Oh my gosh, I was furious. I don't even drive my car like that. Yeah, uncalled for,” Burke says.

He went back to the tire shop and made a complaint with the manager, who, in turn, fired the mechanic responsible. The manager is now considering using in-car cameras for all inspections, as a way to rebuild trust with customers. He also offered Burke a refund and free service for some time, but the man is still considering his options.

Bill Thomas, a manager at the state Bureau of Automotive Repairs, says that behavior like this is in violation of industry standards. “Under no circumstances of diagnosis is that necessary in the operation of a consumer's vehicle,” Thomas says for the same media outlet. “So, we definitely have concerns the minute we see that aspect of it and want to look into the entire transaction.”

The tire shop owners should have immediately offered him a new set of tires to make up for wear and damage from the donuts.
Making the customer feel like they had some small win might avoid litigation for unspecified damages and damage to the car.
Offering free servicing? I would not be going back there.

My dealership refuses to service my car if I require the camera to continue to record. They told me that that if I will not let them unplug the camera, they will not service my car. What does that tell you about the dealership? By the way, this is the Mercedes dealership. And this is the Mercedes dealership service manager telling me that he will not touch my car if I have to have a camera recording.

sounds like time to find a new MB Dealer. I can understand MB point too. If they screw up it takes longer to settle without cameras.

Ask him about the cameras filming customers in the dealership showroom and carpark.
There are probably “security” cameras filming in the workshop too.
Ring the dealer principal and see if the business has a policy of transparency with integrity, or is it a case of big business gathers data, but customers are in the dark?
Service manager knows you will check service times billed against actual times, and also see all the things not done.
If they were clever, they’d just stick a post-it nore over the lens until the car was finished. You can’t stop that.

Evey shop I enter has cameras, but now none want to give receipts unless I ask,,, for my “proof of purchase”.
Convenient for them. Also reduces warranty and refunds when customers have been trained not to have a receipt.

It is the only dealership for 100 miles. They’ve actually told me, if I want to deal with Mercedes I have to deal with them. I bought my garbage scow from another dealership because they were so rude to me. I recently had a problem with a fouled spark plug so I had it taken on a flatbed 100 miles to the other dealership. I wouldn’t trust this dealership to check the tire pressure. It turned out to be a leaking fuel injector. That was a $2500 bill that they would’ve gotten the money for. I paid it with a smile on my face because that dealership was honest.

What is it about tyre shops and dash cams! One of the main UK tyre companies tried to rip me off a few years ago.

I took my Lexus in for 2 tyres and tracking but when I picked the car up it still was pulling, so I looked at the video and found that ..
1. The car was never put on a tracking unit, just lifted in the air while the tyres were fitted. Yet the bill clearly said the tracking was done and charged for.
2. The video showed the fitter getting in the car and going direct to the glove box, opening my ‘car park money bag’ and removing a couple of pounds!

Needless to say, a visit to the manager, video and laptop in hand along with a theft report, and they had a position for a new fitter

I now fit a dash cam as soon as a buy a new car, my SLK got one within days of its purchase

Hence why when I put any of My cars in for maintenance, I drop it off with minimal fuel load to try & discourage any extended test drives....

Plus remove any thing of any value from the car, except a few sweets...!!

Use a free VPN service (I use TouchVPN) and set it for the country that vid is supposedly for. You'll see it then.

Doesn't always work though--services like Hulu detect proxies and still blocks access.
