Well, that's finished driving hasn't it? Presumably the limit won't be 155 mph so a drive up the motorway will only be bearable with a self driving electric car that you can go to sleep in. On the plus side, it should make your current car worth keeping for as long as you possibly can and should, given human nature, make it more valuable.

no different to what is already available on some models. System sees speed limit sign & car slows to correct speed. Right foot overrides.......meant for dozy, stupid drivers who are not paying attention to what they are doing.

Dont some SLKs already have speed limiters as standard so it has already been done.

They do unless you opt for something like sports package.

Darn fools will take away ash tray and cup holders next.
So you can't drink or smoke whilst driving.

And yet these ninnies continue to support the use of mobile phones in the car.

Wait for the breathalyser test before you drive feature.
You may not drink, but annual calibration added to service costs means you'll pay.

True, but that's the object of dodgems.

Road safety stats show higher speed equals higher mortality rate.
However, once over 30mph serious injury is a likely outcome.
So two cars in a head on in a 20 limit have a 40mph impact.
That bit is always ignored.

Track days will be very popular and circuit owners will be very very wealthy indeed as it is becoming as popular as smoking to speed on any open road, if there are any left these days

You have speeding heaven on your doorstep. World's End!

Someone in uniform will even sign your evidence of speed achieved.

Wonder how the autobahn will fit into all this?
Quote:
In 2014, autobahns carried 31% of motorized road traffic while accounting for 11% of Germany's traffic deaths. The autobahn fatality rate of 1.6 deaths per billion travel-kilometres compared favorably with the 4.6 rate on urban streets and 6.5 rate on rural roads.[58]

Between 1970 and 2010, overall German road fatalities decreased by almost 80% from 19,193 to 3,648; over the same time period, autobahn deaths halved from 945 to 430 deaths.[58] Statistics for 2013 show total German traffic deaths had declined to the lowest count ever recorded: 3,340 (428 on autobahns); a representative of the Federal Statistical Office attributed the general decline to harsh winter weather that delayed the start of the motorcycle-riding season.[58][84] In 2014, there was a total of 3,377 road fatalities, while autobahn deaths dropped to 375.[85]

In 2012, the leading cause of autobahn accidents was "excessive speed (for conditions)": 6,587 so-called "speed related" crashes claimed the lives of 179 people, which represents almost half (46.3%) of 387 autobahn fatalities that year.[86] However, "excessive speed" does not mean that a speed limit has been exceeded, but that police determined at least one party travelled too fast for existing road[87] or weather conditions.[86] On autobahns 22 people died per 1,000 injury crashes; a lower rate than the 29 deaths per 1,000 injury accidents on conventional rural roads, which in turn is five times higher than the risk on urban roads—speeds are higher on rural roads and autobahns than urban roads, increasing the severity potential of a crash.[86]
Fewer road deaths on no-limit autobahn. I know that not all of the autobahn has no speed limits but still.....

Our major HWY 401 was originally 70mph (110KPH) but lowered it to 62mph (100KPH) in 1976. Fuel crisis was the cause and was felt that reducing speeds would save fuel. Which it does but now we've got a road that can easily handle 70-80 mph traffic but is not allowed.

Maybe it's a good thing. It seems there are a LOT of people who are behind the wheel (I refuse to say drivers because they aren't) that must have got their licence in a Cracker Jacks box.

But that's a story for another day (people paying examiners to get their license instead of actually doing the test).

Apparently the system can be overridden temporarily. If a car is overtaking a lorry on a motorway and enters a lower speed-limit area, the driver can push down hard on the accelerator to complete the manoeuvre.

There's a bit more about how the system would work here:

I wonder if new car sales would dip as a lot like to be in control of there car and can see an old smart Brabus over taking any new Ł40.000 super car with the tech installed .

But I don't "hammer down" on the pedal to pass. Usually just enough to get by safely. That report suggests that you have to floor it. Rediculous.

Only 2 times I floor it:

1) I made a mistake and have to compensate

or

2) I want some "music".

It's usually # 2

I'm sure it says in the article that I saw that you can disable it at start up but it's enabled every time you start the car. I took this to be it will be like hitting the cancel on the Eco/Comfort button at start up on the current car. It will be useful in 20, 30 and 40 mph roads for me as I try really hard to stick to these limits so I would use this then.

Can't be too hard for tech to beat the system so you don't have to 'off it'
every time you start up.

Wonder how many accidents will be caused by folks with bad/cheap tyres
flooring to pass. Wiggle, wiggle, whoopsie!

Here's a stat for them to figure.

How many speeding deaths vs how many caused by uninsured/banned/unlicensed/badly maintained/
phone using/Drunk/drug driver caused deaths.

Just a headline grabber.

Question

Well, my Skoda has Traffic Sign Recognition (TS it is wrong half the time. Allegedly it works via GPS and Sign recognition, it sees the grey 20mph school signs and displays 20 no matter what time or day it is. If it passes a junction with a 30 sign it will display it even though the speed limit of the road i am on is 50mph. It will also randomly show the wrong limit going one way and the correct limit on the way back kn the sams road.
Although it will be a laugh turning the signs around, 50mph to 70.

Trabant are going to increase in price as they have no electronic equipment at all

And, when the UK leaves the European Union we are not going to be allowed to use their GPS system, which I would say is the backbone of the system.

Are we allowed to be continually tracked?

Cheers Russ

Question

And don't forget that these systems are not intelligent they are reactive.
Adaptive Cruise Control also on my Skoda reacts to the car in front but not the traffic ahead of that. In other words I can see brake lights and traffic bunching up beyond the car in front so I start to slow down. The ACC waits until the car in front starts to slow.
Don't get me wrong, it is very good but sometimes slows aggressively due to it closing too quickly to the car in front.
Can it see through Fog?

Can't say we do not see road signs facing the wrong way, EVER!

Imagine the 'Angry of Mayfair' groups.

Nice, cardboard road sign saying 10 mph as you enter village.

If satnav is out then surely a bit of tape over the camera sorts it.

Ooh. We can have a new car after all.
There is a fix for the new gadgetry.

THE FORCE! of course.
