Bloodhound: Land speed record car is relaunched

Full story https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-47650453

The Bloodhound supersonic car is back, under new management and preparing to renew its pursuit of the land speed record.
The project went into administration last year, unable to secure the financing needed to go racing - even though the vehicle was all but built.
But with the purchase of the car by entrepreneur Ian Warhurst, Bloodhound has been put on a new footing.
Engineers are looking to start high-speed trials "as soon as possible".
These could take place in the South African desert later this year, although team-members are being cautious about giving hard timelines for the re-booted venture.
Mr Warhurst is determined, however, that the new set-up should keep its promises and deliver on its objectives.
"My kids kept saying I should buy a fast car, so I bought the fastest," he joked.
"I knew that I could buy the car, save it and put it in a museum. But once I'd bought it we looked into whether we could run it, whether we could resurrect it as effectively a new project.
"It is commercially viable. We believe the value of the sponsorship will easily pay for the project," he told BBC News.

Latest on Bloodhound trials see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-50017189

A British team is developing a car that will be capable of reaching 1,000mph (1,610km/h). Powered by a rocket bolted to a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine, the vehicle aims to show its potential by going progressively faster, year after year. By the end of 2019, Bloodhound wants to have demonstrated speeds above 500mph. The next step would be to break the existing world land speed record (763mph; 1,228km/h). The racing will take place on Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape, South Africa.

Anyone else think the pursuit of the land speed record using a jet engine and rocket combo is irrelevant now?

Yep....they must have nothing better to do with their time or money! Who cares except the engineers they pay $$$$$$$

Now at 500mph!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-50324992

Bloodhound is now a 500mph car. The British-built straight-line racer recorded its highest speed yet during a hot afternoon run across the Kalahari Desert on Wednesday.
GPS instruments in the vehicle clocked 501mph (806km/h).
Bloodhound's driver, Andy Green, declared himself "chuffed to bits" after bringing the car to a stop.
His team is now increasingly confident it has the means to break the land speed record of 763mph (1,228km/h).
That won't happen for at least a year. More testing is needed, as is more thrust, which will come from the addition of a rocket motor.
At the moment, Bloodhound is powered by a jet engine from a Eurofighter-Typhoon. The trials here on South Africa's Hakskeen Pan will determine just how big a boost that rocket must deliver.
"When you see Bloodhound go off the start line, it flies. And that's with only nine tonnes of thrust from the jet. For the land speed record, we could have another five, six tonnes on top of that from the rocket," explained chief engineer Mark Chapman.

Actually, as I understand it, this has generated a lot of interest in science in universities and high schools. The engineering is not "top secret", it is shared and is open information. I find it very interesting. The engineering behind the wheels, for instance, is incredible; what materials to make them from, what are the centrifugal forces involved; what materials can withstand those forces. Ditto, down forces, brakes, and so on (no end of issues).
