Now this seems illegal in UK

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45758926

For a few years now if a car is not on SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) then a car must be insured perhaps even more so if it is on the public highway. So to me if a car is only insured when it is being driven and not on SORN then it is an illegal act.

AFIK, if a car is not parked on a public highway and is registered as SORN, then there is no need to insure it for anything other than fire and theft should the owner so wish. If it is SORN and uninsured, then any subsequent loss is down to the owner.

Yes, I think we are both on the same wavelength:

SORN - car must be off the public highway, does not require Road Fund Licence (by paying RFL vehicle comes off SORN automatically) does not require Insurance

Car not on SORN - car must be insured, have RFL and if over 3 years old an MOT.

Garage
Question

So, do you insure the car or yourself to drive said car?
Do you contact your Insurance and say my car would like some insurance please.
It is wrong in my opinion, although I agree with SORN.

That guy in the report pays a lot for insurance, I pay around Ł4.32 per week for my AMG fully comprehensive.

Cheers Russ

Most specialist insurance companies will insure your car for fire and theft when your not driving it, like when putting it into storage over the winter or taking it off the road for a year for major work etc and the vehicle is sorn.
Unfortunately some of the big, well known brokers that advertise on tv will only cater for those who drive all year round so you need to look at the specialist / classic insurers to get this kind of package.
It believe that if the car sorn and kept off a public highway (drive / garage) then insurance is not needed at all.

Why would it be illegal? There's a policy in force on the vehicle so the MID would indicate that the vehicle is insured all the time - which it is.

How he pays for that insurance is between him and the insurance company... either a one off lump sum like most of us do, or per mile as in this case. Not sure I understand what you think the issue is?
