CA wildfires

Stay safe folks.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-46155767

At least five people have been killed and more than 150,000 evacuated as two big wildfires rage in California, officials say.

West of Los Angeles, the Woolsey Fire has jumped a major highway and is now threatening coastal areas, including parts of Malibu.

Further north near Sacramento, the five victims were found in cars in a town that was destroyed by the Camp Fire.
Both fires are moving fast, fanned by strong winds.

Hope everybody is safe. I saw it late last night when it started it burned 80 football fields ( not sure if they meant American Football or Soccer) a minute.

I live about 90 miles south of the town of Paradise. The town has been pretty much obliterated. We have had bad smoke in the area the past few days. I feel really sorry for all those people who have lost absolutely everything they own & all the people who lost their loved ones. The cause of the fire is still under investigation & it might have been caused by high voltage lines running through the area which caused the spark to ignite the fire. This utility company also caused the Santa Rosa fire, Napa & Lake county fires. Iím quite sure a lot of lawsuits will be filed!

The deadly wildfires ripping through California have forced hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate, including some celebrities whose homes have been lost to the blazes.

Neil Young, Robin Thicke, Gerard Butler and Miley Cyrus are among those whose houses were ravaged by the Woolsey fire raging north of Los Angeles in Southern California, according to the entertainers' respective online posts.
Butler posted a photo on Twitter of the charred remains of his Malibu home and thanked firefighters for their courage.

Cyrus said on Twitter that she was "completely devastated" by the fires affecting her community.
"I am one of the lucky ones. My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely & that's all that matters right now. My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family & friends stand strong. I am grateful for all I have left. Sending so much love and gratitude to the firefighters and LA country Sheriff's department! "

In a post on his official website decrying the impact of climate change, Young said "I have lost my home before to a California wildfire, now another."
The Woolsey fire is one of three major blazes burning across California. As of Sunday night, the fire had spread to 85,500 acres and was 15% contained.

Together with the smaller Hill fire, which spans 4,531 acres, the Woolsey fire has so far destroyed 179 structures, but fire officials say another 57,000 are threatened. The Hill fire was 75% contained as of Sunday night.

According to the BBC the death count is rising.

I just cannot imagine the scale of fires like these and the ones in Australia.
We should be better at prevention and control in such a modern world.

The ďCamp FireĒ in Paradise CA.has claimed 42 Lives so far & is the deadliest fire in California. They are still searching for more human remains with cadaver dogs & forensic specialists! This community was mostly people over the age of 65 years of age & quite a few did not drive so Iím sure there will be a lot more deaths reported unfortunately.

If I understand right (which I probably dont), one of the reasons these fires are getting so big and out of control is actually BECAUSE we try so hard to prevent them and/or minimize the ones that happen.

Wild fires are a natural part of the life cycle if large woodland areas, especially those in semi-arid climates. If not started by careless humans, they start sooner or later via natural means like lightning. They clear standing deadwood and revitalize the soil for the forest to come back stronger/healthier than before.

Unfortunately humans have the nasty habit of inhabiting places that are prone to periodic natural disasters, like the woodlands of California or the below-sea-level city if New Orleans.

My heart goes out to those injured or killed and their loved ones, but I also respect the strength that mother nature has, and just how futile humans are in the long run by comparison. I wish there were an easy solution, but so long as we inhabit disaster-prone areas, these events will continue.

Perhaps my memory is wrong, but I recall when I was younger that controlled burns
were a key defence against the fires getting out of control.

People habit where it is affordable.
'Entrepreneurs' have developed flood plains, forests etc, but invested little in defensive structure.
It gets left to government.
Sadly, most Governments can no longer fund the work needed.

Yeah controlled burns were definitely a thing but I dunno if they do them anymore, or often enough. You're definitely right that we continue to build in susceptible areas without investing in adequate protection though.

I think a few people missed a few points of the fire origin. A utility Company caused this atrocity much like the the Napa, Santa Rosa, Lake County fire etc! As well as the San Bruno gas Explosions. They are still paying executives Millions of dollars for there valiant effort,! Now they will be expecting Californians to bail them out before they file for bankruptcy before attorneys clean their clock & drain them for every last penny they have.

Oh believe me I didnt miss the news that this particular fire was likely caused by a utility company's negligence. But what I am looking at is the severity of the fires of late and how quickly and easily they spread due to the amount of standing deadwood and whatnot that isnt as prevalent in healthier forests.

What bothers me is that fires are going to happen, whether via natural means or human idiocy, but they are magnitudes worse due to our insistence on attempting to subvert nature's cycle in order to over populate vulnerable, disaster-prone areas.

I saw in a TV program years & years ago that not doing regular burns or keep putting out small regular fires was just storing up trouble for a massive fire...

But I guess certain new residents to these areas would complain if the authorities kept starting small controllable fires, when the conditions where good for controlled burns...
