Mercedes Is Developing An App That Tells Drivers Where It's Safe And Unsafe To Park

In addition to choosing the quickest and easiest route to a given destination based on road construction and traffic reports, navigation systems in tomorrow’s cars could well tell you which are the safest—and least safe—areas in which to drive and park a car.

The Australian website Drive reports that Mercedes-Benz is developing just that. It’s an app that would analyze crime statistics in the U.S. according to the type and severity of offenses being committed and display a color-coded map of areas and open parking spaces where a motorist might be more or less likely to encounter vandalism, assault, and other nefarious activity.

As with a stop light, green would mean there’s nothing to worry about, while yellow would indicate the parking space is in an acceptable though not necessarily preferable area. As one might guess, red tells the driver to avoid the area at all costs.

The automaker’s first trials of the system were conducted recently in Seattle, based on open crime data as recent as two weeks old, instead of quarterly or annual statistics, which the automaker says is critical to its accuracy. According to David McCarthy, the Mercedes-Benz spokesperson quoted in the post, the app is under consideration, but he did not specify when or for which U.S. areas it would debut.

“It’s very interesting because it draws on local geographic knowledge and all sorts of statistics including crime statistics and parking spot availability,” McCarthy says. “Should something like that become available, I’m sure the (take) rate would be very strong.”

Doubt this will last long. The left will call it "profiling", "discrimination", and even "hate speech".

So if you park in a green area and you get mugged or shot or your car stolen and broken in to it
Can you then sue Mercedes ?

Would you sign up to the app next time .
What a load of rubbish .

You can park anywhere and a incident will happen .

And your house the safest place you park your car can still get stolen .
If they want it they will get it .

You will be worried if you park your car at night at home and your app glows RED !
