I was visiting a friend and her neighbor had placed an 8 foot fiberglass ladder at the curb with a sign - FREE !
That's one I just couldn't pass up
so I picked it up and set it next to her garage, wondering how I'd be able to get it home. I'd driven my SLK230 AMG, which I had just gotten.
THEN it occurred to me !
I could put the top down and fit the ladder into the passenger side !
It fit without tying it to anything so I hit the road with it. I had 330 miles to home from Louisville, thru Indy then home, 50 miles east of Columbus Ohio.
On the way home, traffic was moving well (I mean F-A-S-T). I was keeping up with them at 80 - 90. Occasionally, we'd have to slow down for a sheriff so I *****-footed it for a mile or so after the cop. Traffic stretched out in front of me so I had to catch up with them several times. I'd gotten it up to 100 in places and the ladder just sat there, not moving.
Passed another cop and I knew he'd given me the 'stink-eye' as I rolled past him. Sure enough, he pulled out and followed me for a couple miles, pacing several hundred yards behind me. I'd set the cruise at 71.
We passed a disabled car on the other side -
- so he turned around to help that motorist. By this time, my 'front doors' had pulled about a mile ahead of me so I pushed it. Got it up to 115 to catch them and I was amazed that the little car held the road so well at that speed, even with my ladder riding 'shotgun' !
