iCarSoft - Which One is Better?

Hey guys!

Is anyone familiar with the iCarSoft series of scanners? I'm looking at picking one up specifically for my SLK350 but they seem to have 5 different models. Looking at their product description pages seem to indicate the 2.0 models do less then the i980 model.

I'm trying to determine which one will be more comprehensive (more tests/functions) then the others.

Now is that MBII or MB 2.0 They seem to have several variants. The FAQ is not very clear from what I can see.

They list a TON of features for the i980 but very few for the II/2.0 Models. This makes it seem like the i980 is the better one. Why do I get the feeling the product and site are made in China

i980 => https://www.icarsoft.com/Product/s-2...nner_i980.html

Maybe this helps:

Another good option is the Autel DiagLink - it's only $10.00 if you ever need to upgrade to another brand besides Mercedes.

Thank you - that DID help

So it looks like the MB II is the best one, however, I see on e-bay that they say that the MB 2.0 is the latest version (second generation scanner) so MB 2.0 should be better then the MB II scanner.

That clears up a lot. BUT it leaves this issue remaining...

Which is better - the MB 2.0 or the M900 V 2.0 ? For that matter, what is the difference?

Sounds like we're getting closer and it's narrowed down to one or the other...

As far as I know they are the same - the M900 is a private label for different distribution.

Perfect! I'll order up the 2.0 unit as I think we've narrowed it down to that one being the 'latest & greatest'

I am finding more things the MB-II does not do, particularly identifying what a code means. The pic below is an example.

For an R171-172 I like Carley for Mercedes Pro, but does not work with anything before 2005.

For a handheld for all SLKs I prefer the Autel DiagLink with the Benz module (~U$100). This is its report for the same codes:
P2017-1
MIL ON&Stored&Current
Self-adaptation of mixture formation for right bank of cylinders is at limit value (at idle speed). Enrichment over permissible limit (P0171)
P2086-1
MIL ON&Stored&Current
Self-adaptation of mixture formation for left bank of cylinders is at limit value (at idle speed).: Enrichment over permissible limit (P0174)

This is a case where the Merc codes tell you much more than the OBD-II codes:
Torque Pro: DTC
Trouble Codes
P0170 Fuel trim bank 1.
P0173 Fuel trim bank 2.

The real codes (2017/2086) tell me that something is causing a lean condition at idle and is most likely either low fuel pressure or a vacuum leak.

ps other modules for the Autel are U$10 so for about $125 I have coverage for Mercedes, Chrysler, and GM.

pps the iCarsoft has the latest updates as of 4 Sept 18.

I could see that being annoying however, I would expect that to be addressed with a firmware update along the way?

On the other hand, if the scantool does work with all the systems on the car, and does allow me to monkey with them all, then I would say it's a great value. For me, if I'm trying to track down an odd issue, I will usually write the codes down, research them in the service manual and then come up with the way forward.

Mind you, it's reasonable expectations for a reasonable fee. I mean, in an ideal world I'd buy the STAR system clones off e-bay and away I would go. But then, you get a lot more complexity and hassle for that too. Given I'm not going back into the automotive trade really all I need is a comprehensive scan tool for my own car

The last 'real' scantool I bought was something like $10k but it was used in the trade and a requirement. Because of that experience, I find the notion of picking up what looks to be a good scantool for $250 to be pretty cool

The sad thing is, I probably won't use it much. On the other hand, maybe it will get me interested in finally learning (and then remembering) how to use the car!
