I hate mercedes....

We got a new c-class coupe last year (17 plate) and a few (dealership caused) issues aside we're pleased with it.

A month or so ago the satnav starts playing up: "card not found", then its found then "card not found" again and so on and on.

We took it into a, different, local dealership who have advised us that the SD card number didn't match the car's vin which was the cause of the issue - advised that this was correctable for 500 (seriously WTF??!?!?!?), but did recommend that we speak with the supplying dealer to see what happened to the correct card. Upon speaking to the supplying dealer their response was "huh? There's no correlation between the SD card number and the vehicle vin. Don't know what your dealership is on about."

I guess what throws us is that the SatNav worked perfectly for the 1st year which I suspect it wouldn't do if it was 'wrong', but obviously not being a Merc specialist I don't know.

Has anyone else experienced this?

As an aside we took the car back for the recall notice issued by MB and were told a courtesy car would be 50, otherwise a 3 hour wait... in truth I'm getting to the stage where I'm seriously questioning whether or not we're going to try another manufacturer for the next car - which is a shame.

We had that issue with newer Mercedes E-classes when we rented them on holidays in Europe. Cause was usually that the card was not seated accurately or something was pushing against it in the middle console.

Cool

Well I always say, go look at a Skoda, free courtesy car and less problems due to Audi and VW testing all the new high tech stuff the year before.
Then charging you between 10 and 20 thousand less......

Did they clear any errors, it is surprising what clearing errors can do.
The lighting of the buttons stopped working on mine head unit, fixed by clearing errors.

Sadly its the risk when you purchase new your the tester until all faults are found by you and the stress etc
By then you have had enough sold car and new owner has the car with most niggles sorted oot by previous owner .

Buy car over three years old most issues and warranty issues are sorted and car is half the price .

Hence why i never buy new .

@waylander I would have thought that this was a warranty issue and to expect you to pay 500 is quite frankly an insult. It sounds to me that the SD card could be corrupted. Have you tried rebooting your comand unit as this may clear the error? Did the car come with 3 years MAP updates? Post your VIN to get the Datacard for the car as this will show whether it came with the updates and presumably a new SDCard when this is done.

If the dealer wont put this right I would contact MB Customer Services. As for paying for a courtesy car I have never been asked for payment when the car goes in for warranty work or when it is serviced.

I've had issues with Ford and Vauxhall in the past.

Ford were particularly bad when the turbo failed on my fiesta with 3 week left on the warranty, to the point that I'll never buy a ford again and if anyone mentions Sandicliffes of Leicester I'll advise them to go anywhere but there.

My mums Vauxhall went in for a service - in around 2001, and they told her the car needed over 1000 of repairs.
A mechanic friend of my dads checked out the car and said it didn't need any of the work.

We could do with a garage watchdog where you can report these kind of things.

If you find a garage you trust, stick with them!

The dealerships are the real issue.
Regardless of make, a good dealer not only sells, but also helps.

As for buying 3 years old? Can be a worse issue.
You're assuming that owner did the updates and no bodges.
Some do not even lube the roof rubbers.

That said, multimake second hand dealers seem to be better with customers.
And the 'buyer beware' always applies.

You'd expect a new (bar first year) model to be sorted.
It isn't.

The policy is deny all. Look at the balance shaft issues on the 350.
Cars catching fire and still no recalls (various makes).
Buying old tech in a new car makes financial sense.

Cool

Depreciation....just goto love it, mine lost 40,000 in 8 years and only covered 34,000 miles.
I bought my second hand Skoda VRs for 12,000 (new 18,000) with 4,000 miles on the clock, I could have just thrown 3 of them away every two years....

Oh and by the way, both the Skoda's have a HDD for the navigation with the latest one updating when I park up at home, if connects to my WiFi. No of this taking it to the dealer for a day.

Back in the olden days, car manufacturers had an engineering skill that set them apart, mass produced cars are mass produced by mass produced robots assembling mass produced components from companies that mass produce components for all the other mass producers of cars.

Cheers Russ

It's not a courtesy car if you have to pay. They should have provided you with a free Mercedes loaner.

Up to individual dealer. As they are "privately owned" (although some ARE factory owned), it's up to the dealer principal to decide what to offer.

Some provide freebies only for scheduled factory maintenance. Others for that maintenance AND repairs.

When you have a new 60,000 - 70.000 mercedes benz and it cuts out on the motorway you have no choice but take it back to the dealership to sort out .

Even though it had to be online to Germany to rectify .

So after Three years most issues are sorted out like my client had no choice on that issue .

As said best buy after 3 years most recalls / issues are rectified on the so called servicing as you have no choice as such to take it back to keep warranty going .

The days when Mercedes was considered a premium brand and the dealers or salespeople could get away with a snooty attitude are gone. About the only thing premium about Mercedes today is the price.

There are plenty of brands that compete with Mercedes that offer just a high level of quality. Mazda makes great well engineered vehicles which will offer better reliability than any Benz:

Even the lowly vehicle made by Hyundai offer cars every bit as good as Mercedes. If you want an SUV, you'll be money ahead with a Tucson or Santa Fe. Mercedes tries very hard to promote their GLC or GLA Coupe & SUVs, but I have yet to read a positive review on these vehicles from a respected unbiased source. One thing you might do is examine the used prices on these vehicles. Mercedes takes a bigger hit in depreciation. An interesting review:

The SLK/SLC has been the only thing keeping me coming back to MB. I just havent found a hard top or convertible or targa top I like elsewhere other than a Corvette Grand Sport or possibly Jag Ftype S or Ftype 400, and the Jag is too $$$ so I would have to buy used.

The SLC might be the last MB I buy.
