BMW E39 M5 Sells for Record $176,000 at Pebble Beach Auction

Has the car collector world gone mad??

Some would argue that paying $176,000 for one should be considered blasphemy and yet, that’s exactly what happened this weekend at Pebble Beach, during an auction. A mint 2002 BMW E39 M5 with only 437 miles on the clock was sold for that exact sum to one very interested collector. The sellers were expecting anything between $140,000 to $180,000 which shows they were pretty spot on with their estimates.

The car is finished in Titanium Silver and has Black Nappa leather inside and a couple of other options and is part of the collection of a certain Glen Konkle. Among enthusiasts, he is know for purchasing two cars at a time whenever he decides he wants one. He does so just because he wants to keep one in storage, under controlled conditions while driving the other on a daily basis and this is exactly what happened here as well.

The car’s history shows that it was sold back in 2010 at auction, when it had about 69 miles on the clock, for some $48,400. The demand for such M models has gone up lately and even though the car has close to 500 miles on the clock today, that still didn’t take away any of its appeal as it is basically brand new still. Therefore, we arrive at the $176,000 sum which may be a lot for some but it definitely points to a trend, one that may turn a profit for you, if you still have a mint M5 in the garage.

Why the **** would someone pay so much for a mass produced sedan or coupe like this?? I dont care how mint it is, there is nothing *special* about the car. Am I missing something that makes this particular model collectible?????

It's better than buying a piece of old toast for $28,000

'Virgin Mary' toast fetches $28,000

A decade-old toasted cheese sandwich said to bear an image of the Virgin Mary has sold on the eBay auction website for $28,000.

An internet casino confirmed it had purchased the sandwich, saying it had become a "part of pop culture".

Goldenpalace.com says it will take the sandwich on world tour before selling it and donating the money to charity.

Diane Duyser, from Florida, says the sandwich has never gone mouldy since she made it 10 years ago.

By the time the sandwich auction closed on Monday the sale had received over 1.7 million hits on the auction site.

I had a MY 2000 E39 M5. 400 pounds-feet and 400 Hp in a beautifully mannered 6 speed manual V8 sedan. Folding rear seats, phenomenal leather interior, balanced suspension, air bags everywhere.

“Synergy” is the best I can come up with. All the features of the M5 matched each other perfectly. Nothing jumped out as needing improving. Handling, looks, stance, luxury appointments ... nothing. Well, maybe a short shifter .... I just remembered that little exception!!

A little example of what I mean regarding synergy: the cigarette lighter popped out with a very-controlled slow motion. So did the ash tray. And the four panic handles at the roof. And the front & back cup holders. EXACTLY the same dampened speed. Were they all designed by the same guy? Doubt it. Let go of the panic handles in my SRT-8 Dodge Charger and they went BOINGGG against the roof! Nothing went Boing on the E39. Not even the sunshades when you closed them.

In my mind the SLK isn’t quite there. At the top of my list is the 722.9 7 speed auto transmission in our R171 AMG’s. Easily identifiable as a weak link, not up to the functional standard of everything else in the car. I consider myself a driving (and maintenance) enthusiast and feel it’s the biggest let down bar none. And not ‘easily remedied’ like understeer, weak brakes, under-damped suspension, pedal placement, clutch & throttle feel, shifter throw ... and so forth. In the words of a journalist that reviewed the Black Series, “it almost ruins the car. Almost”.

Don’t get me wrong though! I thoroughly enjoy my ‘06 AMG! But it could have been so much better with a ZF auto or 6 speed manual transmission.

So there are my two cents toward the question. Hope I don’t get flamed for sharing what enthralled me with a particular BMW! I mean, I did end up here ... right?!!

So what might I consider paying for a pristine E39 with 400 miles? Probably 40k?

Yeah. So there’s NO chance of me ever being “that guy”!

Don't forget, it took two bidders to get there.

If you have the $$$ and want to bid hey that is your business go for it. I do however scratch my head on what you do with the car drive it park it in the garage or living room and look at it like art work on the wall? We all know every mile you put on or door ding you get nobody will ever give you 176K plus for it when you go and auction it off down the road.

Now I can see a E9 will fetch that kinda $$$ for an all original unmolested car since so few survived.
