Is the the future?

ElectraMechanica will sell this one passenger electric car called the Solo for ~ $20,000

(there is also a planned 2 seater Roadster called the Tofino.

Neither is speed demon though. The Tofino is rated at 0-100 at 7 seconds and the Solo at 8 seconds.

Based in Vancouver, they're planning on issuing a $10MM public offering shortly.

Morgan 1910

GM, 1964

Tri-Magnum 2000

and then there was the Reliant Robin (many sold before Tog Gear became involved)
.

The problem with electric cars is that they have a ways to go before reaching the power density per pound, refueling speed, and reliability of a gasoline engine. The only reason they work today is that there are so few that they do not overload the grid.

Should the motor industrey be worried ?

As any company can build a small electric car as less components req as such and batteries will be available off the shelf and power unit .

Just needs a shell , 4 x wheels , and a ipad to go .

See "are so few that they do not overload the grid". Yet. Also my power company adds a surcharge if you exceed a certain number of KWH.

Bottom line: gasoline is still both the most power-dense and cheapest media. Electric does have a place for a power boost on acceleration and regenerative braking to allow a very small (under 1 liter) gas engine for cruise and AC power. Add direct injection and a turbo and a 500cc single producing about 75hp at 6500 rpm on 87 PON with a CVT becomes useful and easily maintained. With "interesting" performance.

Could teach a class on why (have to understand flame propagation) but for current pump gasolines you want a slightly oversquare engine with a stroke of 3"-3.5". Add cyl to meet your target displacement.

And so it goes.
