I have given serious thought to buying a three wheeled "car" from Elio Motors. Given that they are not yet in production and given that the initial deposit is nonrefundable, I have been more than a little hesitant . A friend of mine sent me this article about the company. I will post the link below. I am distrustful by default, and as time passes I can't help but wonder if the whole thing is one very sophisticated (and legal) scam. I would love be to hear (read) the thoughts of any members on this subject.

History shows that breaking into the car business is nearly impossible. I'd say impossible except for Tesla, and Elon Musk is not really out of the woods yet on Tesla until the Model 3 production starts on time. So the guy might not be a crook but it's a tough deal.

Have you considered a used Nissan Leaf? You won't have anyone crashing into you trying to take photos of your weird 3 wheel car in a Leaf. I have the vague impression that they are cheap used.

IMHO this is a stock scam. Everyone's money will be gone. I've had a number of folks ask me about this over the years and that's what I told them.

I think it's got scam written all over it, and yet I want it to be true. The funny thing is, it's been done before.

See also Aptera, which were local to me. These companies come out with press releases like clockwork, always looking for that last 25 million dollar injection to get production started.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aptera_Motors

Quite honestly I put Faraday Future in the same category.

What I find sad is that, in the early 90's, Suzuki had a 4 wheeled, 3 cylinder, car that could carry two adults and 2 small children in comfort and, with only one person on board got over 65mpg on the highway and 55-60 mpg in city driving. It was also sold by Chevrolet as the GEO Metro XFI. Cost was under $10k. I had one and got 65 mpg or better week in and week out for three years driving 900+ miles a week on my 90 mile each way commute to work. Sadly, when it needed replacement, the XFI version was no longer being made because it hadn't sold well.

Three wheeler?

Buy one of these instead!

This is mine...

As for the 'scam'; I am not too sure. It is likely that they are or have been using the deposits to fund the development of the project and make production viable. His financial backing probably needed a level of investment and 'guaranteed' sales to maintain investment. So deposits are a way of achieving that... however you could look at it as a scam - using others money to make a dream come true

How is this any different from any of the other crowd-funding ventures out there:

I need $100,000 seed money to fund my fantastic and breath-taking new idea (I love superlatives and use them as often as possible) for building a stupendous and wonderful new mouse trap. I've got the best and most brilliant people in the world (me and my wife) working on this idea (for 3 hours so far) and I promise it is a fantastic new way to get mice out of your house.

The reason I believe this will be the best mousetrap ever is not only will it be built in the US of A, it will provide a job for one person and that employee will manufacture two versions: one version will be painted pink and will have absolutely gorgeous pictures of unicorns to attract female mice.

Another version will be painted with black, green and gold racing stripes with plenty of carbon fibre trim to attract male mice .

This concept has already attracted hundreds (well, two anyways--me and my wife) supporters and if you agree, send me $50 and I promise to give you a .000005% share in my company as well as giving you an opportunity to purchase one of these mousetraps in your choice of colour (as noted above) at a pre-introductory price of $25 each (regularly priced at $300 each).

Production expected to begin in 4th qtr 2022.

Gee, I'll take 6 of each colour Mr Inventor. Uh huh

Far as I know there is no guarantee of getting your money back if it fails and in many cases, production schedules keep getting pushed back and pushed back due to "unforeseen" circumstances (usually, they run out of investors ie M.O.N.E.Y. ) .

It's not. Give me your money to fund my dreams.

I have been following the Elio from the beginning and still would very much like to get one if they ever make it. But I will not put any money down until I can actually touch and drive one. I like the entire idea of it, makes total sense for a car to commute with. If it was open air, that would be perfect.
I still think they will make it, but if not, maybe one of the other makers will buy it from them.

IMHO the economics are completely unrealistic. Elio Motors is going to retail a new completely enclosed vehicle for around $7,000 complete with Air conditioning. Even with highly efficient mass production numbers manufacturing in a state of the art plant I don't think there is any way to get close to that low price point. Let's look at the highly competitive motorcycle market built with leading tech high efficient factories in big volumes. A Suzuki 650 scooter retails for over $10,000 In the super highly competitive midsize motorcycle naked bikes: Yamaha FZ07, Suzuki SV650, and Kawasaki Z650 sell for $7000. But Elio can build a whole enclosed car with AC for the same price? If you believe that, I have some swamp land in Florida for you
