Classics – 1969 Maserati Ghibli Spyder takes almost a million home
During the 10-day Mecum Kissimmee 2017 extravaganza this beautiful Italian convertible managed to grab the spotlight among no less than 1,981 cars that crossed the auction lot at the event in Florida.
The Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee saw this star rise to stardom, as the beautiful 1969 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 Spyder was the prize winner with its $920,000 sale receipt – a natural price considering it has been recently restored and it’s one of just 25 units from the Spyder line featuring the 4.9-liter V8. It’s also among the first to have been produced and it’s indeed a rare sight – the total manufacturing queue for Spiders only had 125 examples. Just 25 of those used the 4.9-liter version of the V8 engine, while the rest packed the smaller 4.7-liter unit. In this derivation the engine delivers 330 horsepower via a five-speed ZF manual gearbox.
The restoration included a repaint, a restored black leather interior, and there’s some “minor but acceptable wear” visible, though it can still go up to 70-mph, as the new owner of the two-seat spyder designed by none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro clearly knows. By the way, the Italian thoroughbred was followed by a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible sold for $775,000 and a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, going for $625,000.
