Carbon Fiber parts - Is it just me

Personally I think the whole carbon fiber look (cosmetic) is way overdone.. I thought it was pretty cool when it first showed up (probably 10 to 15 years ago or more) but I now find it dated like a fashion that should have moved on.

Structural parts make sense but it can be painted to a different colour.

I realize that many like the look but was wondering what the consensus is.

I have to agree with you CF is a bit yesterday like Hammer Pants.. I also get a little tired of the brushed alu interior. I think there is a new trend around the corner real wood again. Mazda is playing tons of the CX 9 commercials focus is on the wood.

speaking of wood my 1960 Ponton also had wood on the dash....

I think it depends on the car and the types used.

More importantly, it depends if the owner likes.

Most of us tinker to please our eyes and not others.
If we are happy with our own car then that's all that matters.

I think CF as a 'look' is ridiculous, especially if it's just a vinyl sticker. I'm pretty sure CF has been used and shown on sports car for at least 25 years.
Only time CF should be exposed is when the whole part is CF, any other time, it's too gaudy, just like gold-plated trim and those gold plated wheel arches from the 80s.
If the whole shell or frame is CF, then it should be dyed or use a special knit. 'naked' CF is just like the 'matte paint' fad that is going around.

It's like shoes or clothes ...

We all like 'different' flavours of the same thing ... for me, the Wood is too 'Old Man', and the Brushed Ally too bright, but thats just me!!

It'd be boring if we're all the same!!

I personally like the CF look, and as has been said previously we all have different tastes. If i use the CF look on my car it is for me and not for anyone else. If we all liked the same thing the world be a boring place!

Looks like we have a number of different opinions here... no surprise there really!

Personally, I like the look of CF, but we're all entitled to our own opinions as to what looks good on our own cars.

Ya the vinyl stuff gets old, the real stuff is ridiculously over priced, most of the time non-functional or not even real (laminated over OEM which adds weight- the whole reason for cf in the first place is to lose weight and add strength). I did the vinyl on a couple places on the exterior for protection mostly but that is as far as it goes. I am leaning towards dipping https://www.youtube.com/dipyourcar because I like the endless contrast and color coordinating possibilities not to mention the custom look that can be achieved. Also it is pretty durable and can provide quite a bit of original finish protection as well as it can be easily removed later if you want to change it up or it becomes "yesterday". I will say an all black car with REAL CF parts all over is pretty awesome to look at though:LOL, look out Jeff AMG KILLR

Oh there is hydro-dipping too, there is even a wood grain finish for all the tree killers:

The CF fad must officially be on the wane. Quote from the self-appointed mavens of style at Motor Trend in their AMG S65 vs Bentley Continental head-to-head: "...the carbon fiber that we have in here is popular now --- and hopefully it will be gone in a couple of years..." (aprox. 4:18 in)

Ultimately, it all comes down to entirely personal subjective tastes, but those tastes change over the years (wouldn't choose to wear some of the clothes I had in the past). The classics, however, hold up pretty well.

Insofar as cars, can't go wrong with quality wood, leather and metal...at least, for me.

Now to dig out my 40-year-old leather jacket and go for a ride. It's a bit chilly this morning.

I agree with the fake CF. How about the new flat primer paint colors especially used on motorcycles? It reminds me of when all I could afford was junker cars I would fix up with Bondo and primer and couldn't afford to paint. Give me a bright shiny paint job any day!

My '48 Humber Hawk also had a wood dash (as well as wooden door trim around the windows)
Not mine but identical. Mine also had a factory sun roof and was RHD. When I got it I was told it was an ex Scotland Yard car (still had the wiring for the siren but that was missing). Pity I never restored it (sold it 30 yr after I got it). It was driveable when I got it in '78 as well.

Mine also had a fog lamp (as seen below the left headlight). I believe this was the Snipe:

Aside from the steep price of entry to be a dedicated follower of fashion, sometimes it seems plain stupid.

There was a matte-painted C63 AMG coupe in my dealer's showroom, with a big "DO NOT TOUCH" sign on it...because doing so left nearly impossible to remove fingerprints and cleaning left the affected area's paint surface a bit shiny.

I have a neighbor with a new day-glow neon green Corvette. Suspect that choice will be popular in a few years.

Yep but the "wood" is probably 1mm or less thick! Just a very thin veneer. Like the a lot of the "solid wood" furniture being sold these days - solid pine with a quality wood (eg Oak) veneer.

I agree with Jules555 100%, each to their own. A personal toy like a SLK, needs no explanation as to choice of colour or trim. If it makes one smile that's enough reason.
