Has anyone gone backwards fast enough to actually change into 2nd with the 7g? I'm usually in C mode since take off is very fast in reverse Sport.. If that makes sense.

That reminds me of my younger years in the 1970's.
They organized "reverse races" over here with little cars made by the Dutch truck manufacturer DAF. These cars had an auto gearbox called "variomatic" with in infinite number of gears, both forward and backward. Gears were the same in each direction, so you could drive just as fast backward as you could go forward.
Lots of fun, especially because they put a ramp across the track.

And I believe wiki agrees with you

The 7G-Tronic has two reverse gear ratios: 3.416 and 2.231. The winter mode, also recently named 'comfort' mode, starts out in 2nd forward and 2nd reverse.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merc...c_transmission

Haven't been able to find out at what 'reverse' speed it upshifts at though when in S mode. I did find this though. Everything you wanted to know about the 7G:
https://www.scribd.com/mobile/doc/10...enz-7-G-Tronic

It appears that if you floor it (in reverse) when in C, it starts off in 1st, not 2nd. If you start (reverse) "normally", it starts off in 2nd. Still can't find at what speed it'll upshift though.

Found this document
7G-TRONIC (722.9) in the Workshop Tips and Tricks This is a link that downloads a shop pdf (which I did and is safe). Just authorize the download.

On pg 10 it says 3 actuator conditions must be met. You can read if you're so inclined. No speeds mentioned yet.

A lot more info here

If I remember correctly it won't upshift in reverse. There are just 2 different ratios, one for S and one for C mode. But there's no notion of an R1 and R2 gear and a shift-point in between them.

That was my assumption as well.

The old mechanical speedometers if not pinned at zero would go backwards when reversing. I know my old Shelby Charger Turbo would, it was numbered 5-85 around maybe 75% of the gauge back when 55mph was USA limit. I had at one time wrapped it all the way around past 15MPH... I never checked my reverse speed though. I have been in my brother-in-law's F150 when he reversed well over 40MPH once.

That actually makes perfect sense. Altho, unless you're a getaway driver doing a J turn, I can't imagine ever needing that kind of acceleration in Sport.. going backwards!

Come on you boffins! I'm sure there's some genius who can do the gear ratio/max rpm math? I'm guessing 45 mph in C.

I will, busy at the moment, but
1 - 4.377
2 - 2.859
3 - 1.921
4 - 1.368
5 - 1.00
6 - .82
7 - .728
R1 - -3.416
R2 - -2.231

R2 is 86% as fast as 3rd gear. and I think you can do about 80 in 3rd... So well over 60MPH.

EDIT: preliminary calculations 51MPH at 6,000 with 3.91 rear.
