1972 Lotus Elan +2 Is A Classic Purchased Without Regret

Our latest film features the often overlooked 1972 Lotus Elan +2, a car which here at the Petrolicious HQ we literally can’t stop staring at. From a distance you could forgive someone for overlooking the Elan, but as your gaze lingers shapes start to emerge. For me, I start to see shades of Toyota 2000GT in the front, and a dash of Renault Alpine in the back.

It’s lithe, it’s slippery looking. It’s got character.

I once owned a 1970 Elan +2S, the first +2S in the US. Berliner is right...it does have character. However, as many things with "character", I had a love/hate relationship with that car. I loved driving it, but always said I would never drive it further than I could hitchhike back. It was the most unreliable car I have ever owned, before or since. I lived in Wisconsin at the time and the nearest "dealer" was in Chicago, 90 miles away. I put dealer in quotes because it was just an old two-bay gas station converted into a Lotus repair shop. They didn't have any cars in stock. I buy cars to drive them, not store them, but the Elan +2S didn't make a good year around daily driver...and it was my only car, other than my wife's. Further complicating the unreliability was that the car was quite difficult to work on. I had the factory shop manual and did almost all the work myself, but once I had to take it to a local independent mechanic to replace one of the rear axle donuts. When I went to pick it up, the garage owner, who at the time was not in a very good mood, told me, "Don't ever bring that car back here!".

In spite of that Lotus experience, I bought another Lotus in 2005...a new Elise and it was my daily driver for 8 years (in Southern California, not Wisconsin). After a few minor initial build quality issues, it was dead reliable for the rest of the eight years I drove it. I opted not to move it to Florida and it now sits in my son's garage in Northern California, next to his AMG GT. I'm still a die-hard Lotus fan, but at my age they are too hard to get in and out of.
