Really? Driver ticketed for warming car in his own driveway

A Roseville, Mich., man is becoming Facebook famous after he posted a picture of a ticket he received from a Roseville cop for warming up his vehicle in his own driveway.

Nick Taylor posted the sarcastic Facebook post on Thursday, thanking the officer who gave him the ticket. According to the picture, the ticket is for his car that was left running in the driveway with no one around.

"I've never heard of any city ordinance of law like that," Taylor said.

On Thursday, it was frigidly cold and he wanted to keep his car running while he ran into his girlfriend's house. But he left it unlocked with the key in the ignition. Chief James Berlin said that's a problem.

"This is purely a public safety issue. You can't do it. You see it all the time, people hop in a running car and Steal them. Something bad happens when that occurs," Berlin said.

The post received thousands of comments and shares since he posted it.

"I mostly just put it online to see what people thought of it and see if it's happened to anyone else because I've never heard of this," Taylor said.

The ticket shows ordinance listed as 99006 but there is no ordinance in the city or state that corresponds to 99006. Under the description of the offense, it lists VEH/MOTOR ON UNATTENDED 895. Ordinance 895 is listed as being part of 'rodent control' on Roseville's website.

FOX 2 contacted the Michigan State Police for more information. Lt. Mike Shaw says there is no state law that prohibits letting your car idle with the keys in the ignition.

At this point, it seems difficult to decipher which code the officer was enforcing. Either way, Nick has an appointment on January 26th in District Court in Roseville.

Well you do live in a free and democratic country...
The best thing the C op could have done was to turn the engine off and explain the risk of theft to the owner.
Police, looking after us? Not controlling us.

This being new is new to me, as I thought there were such regulations in effect throughout the US. Of course, I'm not saying those regs are being enforced.

One problem is that careless people run up everyone else's car liability insurance. I don't want to pay my way and theirs too.

I saw an article about a month ago that one of the local cities was aggressively enforcing that rule. So it's not just that one location.

SMH Sure am glad I live outside the city limits where I don't have to worry about legal organized crime or peeps pushing and shoving and treading on one another. Also glad I don't have nosy neighbors (trees and animals are my neighbors) Build not thy house upon one another for there will be great friction and conflict You really would not believe the level of unnoticed stress your body carries from being subjected to the harmful effects of city life (seriously). And surely we all know the results of unchecked stress from peeps being all up in each others business, pointing fingers at you for this and that, pay up for this, pay up for that. Next thing you know your backed in a corner with no place to go and SNAP! Happens all the time in the big cities everyday, surrounded by chaos and mayhem. No peace whatsoever, not even in your own driveway. There will be peace in mine though and any unauthorized will be in pieces Ya that is total racketeering and bs, so sick of these peeps and their law for this law for that. I tell you though, world would be a better place if peeps would just take responsibility for their own actions. Instead their has to be a law for everything, so many in fact near about everyone is a criminal. Nobody wants to take responsibility for their actions but are quick to condemn others for theirs. Bad thing is, laws change with time as lawmakers die out and new ones fill in. And then what is legal here is illegal there. Lets just change the rules and regulations for our special interests as we play our game of life.

Somewhat off topic but:

Although I've edited your post, I generally agree with everything you've said. I've always struggled with high b.p. but since I've retired, my B.P. is way down to the extent I've halved my meds.

AND not having to drive on major highways during rush hour (now that's an oxymoron if ever I heard one) is wonderful. Even during the middle of the day, it's slow going. Why aren't all these people at work?

I avoid going into Toronto if at all possible.

Retirement is wonderful

Big difference huh, I certainly feel much better since I have removed myself. Retirement came by no choice for me, but was a good thing because that is what it took to let go. Lol on the whole "why aren't all these people at work". Population explosion and sustainability overshot by far, doesn't look like peeps doing much these days but making new laws

P.S. I can't enjoy my ride unless I'm on some back country road so ya I avoid all well traveled ones.
