Let’s cut off phones in the car

If they cut off the phone while driving we have more people on the side of the road than on the road "Beautiful" honestly this madness really has to stop now before more people loose there life.

By now, I thought car companies or the telecom folks would have figured out how to disarm cellphones in automobiles. They may have figured it out but just don't want to do it. They have kicked the can down the road, hoping the next guy would take care of it.

Mind you, cellphones should work if the vehicle is shut off. And there should be an override that would allow them to be used in an emergency. But in general, using a cellphone while driving is a bad idea.

I am amazed at how many people I see using their phones to text or check email while driving. They are an accident waiting to happen.

Of course, we could wait until autonomous vehicles are ubiquitous. That would put an end to the problem of distracted driving. But until then, we are injuring and killing way too many drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Driver distraction has always been an issue. We used to worry about drinking coffee or eating fast food in the car. I've seen people shaving or putting on makeup while driving 70 mph. But cellphones have taken the problem to a new level.

We need a solution -- a simple but effective step. Somehow, we have to make drivers believe that when they are driving on public roads, they are on a racetrack. The road needs every bit of their attention.

Thousands of lives are being lost with distracted driving. There are too many diversions for drivers, even without cellphones. Let's use cellphones outside the vehicle.

Not quite as bad here.

We're close to a big shopping centre and there's still people holding on to the old ways before phones.

Hand signals seem to be universally understood,
judging be some of the ensuing chases.

I make my living on cell phone usage, and normally I try not to get in Darwin's way, but I agree - emergency calls only if you're in motion over 10MPH. The call phone companies could do this if they wanted to.

I guess one of the issues with disabling calls while driving would be for the passengers - they would be cut off too (teenage kids on the backseat, spouse talking to friends, politicians and managers with drivers who try to work etc.). What would already help if they would enforce existing laws, but as long as I see police officers using their phone while driving all the time this may be a longshot...

Leave it as is

The handheld phone should not work but the BT connection should work. In other words, HANDS-FREE calls over BT only. This can be done. NO outgoing messaging while moving. Passengers included. But let's not forget passengers are also a distraction in themselves.

I don't like Nanny laws generally lest we all become like California which has a bunch of nanny laws and no one ever gets onto an accident due to distracted driving. //Sarcasm. New Hampshire has no seat belt law. We have no helmet laws for adults or kids on bicycles. Darwin rules the day,
Free from mandated emissions or auto inspections . No registration permits needed for trailers. No mandatory recycling.....State stays out of our lives,

Hell you can buy a plane, boat, or car here and Sales tax is capped at $300

I work in the middle east. If you think people using their phones while driving is a problem where you are - you aint seen nothing. Here almost everybody uses the phone while driving. Rear ending is common.

I've chosen not to drive here (lived here 10 years ago and drove - was permanently angry) and use Taxis or Limos but it is a constant fight to stop the drivers using their phones while driving.

Abolish speed limits and insurance. Disallow people from suing anyone because of a car accident. Hide for a few months. Once we come back out and clear up the carnage, maybe we'll see saner, more sensible driving.

Maybe.

Its all down to the phone makers to put a block on usage of phones etc

But bluetooth calls are fine at the moment .

But texting
Facebook
Facebook likes
And all the other apps
And even game playing while driving
Or movie watching .
Should all be blocked once the phone detects the car running .

The phone manufactures all communicate with the car manufactures in what there doing and there updates on car play etc so .

Are they to blame .??

Why do we now have to be in contact with the rest of the world 24/7 365 days a year? We didn't HAVE to be even 15/20 years ago but now it seems the world will end if we're not

My employer issues me with a mobile phone

and eventually, when the 1st one I had died, they gave me a newer one, with bluetooth connectivity ( still no camera, or anything like desirable features, it's a work phone after all). They then went and pointed out to me that I ( and all my chums) was not to make or accept calls on the move as a driver, except in an emergency. ( ha, like I'd be calling them in an emergency). Failure to adhere to this instruction would result in disciplinary action. So I behave myself. The best part of it is, if any of my colleagues do call me when I'm driving, unless they have called me from a mobile phone, I have no idea who it was, as the phones we use don't reveal their numbers. So I'm left guessing as to which of my 25,000 colleagues tried to call. Unless they are clever enough or desperate enough to keep trying until they finally get me.
As for my own smartphone, I have bluetooth hands-free in all the cars, and I'm not a rich kleptocrat like the yuppies in the Ferrarris and Porsches and AMGs and BMW Ms I see all the time trying to negotiate right-angle corners too fast with a phone clapped to their ear with one hand. If I can afford Ł80 ( at the time) for a parrot, either hard-wired or the portable version, then so can they. I still don't like to make outgoing calls, even using the now very familiar parrot controls. So I generally leave it to incoming only. And even then, most of the call is spent repeating and confirming what was said, or though to be said.
The once I did use it to call the police to report an obstruction in the outside lane of the motorway it had me so distracted describing things to them that I missed a braking point and ended up having my photo taken at 8mph over the limit.....
Damn the things to hell as far as i'm concerned, but the genie is well out of the bottle now. and you can't find a phone box one every street corner like you once could, maninly because of....mobile phones.

I agree. People act as if distracted driving started with cell phones, but it has been an issue for as long as cars have existed. Passengers, food, drink, changing stations on a radio, lighting a cigarette, talking on the CB radio, men shaving, women putting on makeup, the list goes on and on and on. There's really no cure for stupid, other than Darwin.

But, before too many people decide to move here, I'd point out that, while you're right about the sales tax cap, you neglected to mention the "personal property tax" on those items we get nailed with every year we own them.

It's not the technology it's the muppets behind the wheel.
An acquaintance lost her husband as wagon driver didn't see the line of traffic and literally squished him in two leaving her with a disabled daughter and a huge hole in her heart.
What we all forget is loose concentration for a second and you are in charge of a killing machine.
Like others have said there are other distractions myks mum got mowed down at the bus stop by a young driver changing the cd lucky for his mum she only came away with a few broken bones considering she was hit by a vitara.
With more and more distractions being introduced into modern cars I can only see the problem multiplying

Almost right. The girl was TEXTING on a mobile.
And due to lack of evidence got away with it.

Too busy crying that she'd had an accident to check out my mum under the car.

Perhaps she was busy trying to find a crying smilie to express emotion.

Using the phone on Bluetooth is fine by me, if you maintain control of the car.
But we should be policing ourselves, then we wouldn't nee nanny laws.

30 years ago drink driving was illegal but it was common place.
Society accepted it.

I still favour the cars being upgraded.
Play with smokes, phone and seatbelt, airbags etc are disabled
and a six inch spike rises from the centre of the steering wheel.
Then maybe the perp gets nailed along with the victim.

As a Truck Driver I see it daily how people drive down the road at 70 MPH+ and get to involved having a conversation via text message playing around on Facebook and forget about that they are driving. I had one driver the other day hanging next to me for 15 Miles at 65MPH just tappn and scrolling away on his FB. I finally had enough and hit the horn after I let him go by me you had to see how quickly he woke up.

Sure we have Nanny Laws hey I spilled Ketchup on my pants while driving changed a CD etc etc with those things you do not "tune out" like you do with a Smart Phone. I get fined $ 2799 if a Trooper sees me holding a Phone in my hand. It will be $ 10.000 for the 1st offense for my boss.

Nothing wrong using a "Hands Free" device. Another problem I see is that people think they can handle it..... texting driving etc etc. Just last week we had somebody driving under one of out trailers because she was on the phone.......and did not see the truck lucky for her she survived but the car was a total loss.

Something needs to be done because we loose way too many people because of texting and driving. Heck just watch people in a grocery store they can not even push a shopping cart and talk on the phone or text without running into each other or a display.

check this one out.

Trying to be a lady as I could think of many other things to call them.

Didn't see a truck classic but not as bad as a mate didn't see a fire engine with blue lights !!!!!! She totalled her car but lucky she walked away and the fire engine had minor damage but they had to find another to go to the emergency.

All the cell phone companies would have to do this at the same time or lose customers to those who didn't, but I am not sure we will ever see this. I would guess the powers that be, find the damages and life's lost acceptable at this time and then of course we have those who don't want other people telling us what we can and can't do.
