I was clicking through some of the Jay Leno's Garage videos on YouTube and came across the one on his 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. Beautiful things, I remember ogling one of them that was in our neighborhood when I was a small boy and being thrilled at the beautiful sound it made.
Anyway, I started looking at the 300SL Gullwing spec and the specs of my 2006 SLK280 and was realizing that they're not all that far off ... similar wheelbase, similar overall weight, 3L six cylinder engine with about 230 hp, similar top speed ... Of course the modern car has better suspension, better brakes, better fuel economy, vast changes in creature comforts, ABS, ESP, etc etc. And you can get in and out of it perhaps a bit more easily. But ... they both make such a nice noise when on the pipe.
I fantasized about a Gullwing for years. Now I feel like I actually have something close to it. AND I can put the top down when I feel like it without having to have a second one ...
