So I decided to wave at other SLK drivers....

And I completely forgot that I had borrowed the husband's TT as I'd reached the limit on my fuel card and he had more petrol than I had.

So any UK SLK drivers in the Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire area if you wondered why a woman in a TT was waving at you. That would be me.

My first car was a VW Beetle , we allways waved to each other on the roads in the UK when I was there ! A family type feeling I haven't had from any other car , until now ...

Talking

...and for soon-to-be owners of a new SLK on "this side" of the pond (it's half way to me here in Southern California, nearing the Panama Canal), is there a secret wave I should know, or does any kind of acknowledgement do? ...or should US SLK owners even do the wave/acknowledgement thing? I expect and love my UK friends for such personable actions, but here in the US, well, I'm not so sure if a 50+ guy riding solo in his SLK most of the time, it's the "thing" to do in a majority of neighborhoods (and I know a few to avoid!)

Bert, in Indy, when I was driving my SLK on a daily basis, I rarely got a return wave. Some people on SLKW think it, waving, is not "proper". Wave if you want, and if you get a return wave, note it on a calendar... you probably won't have many notations

"Think as I think," said a man,"Or you are abominably wicked; You are a toad."
And after I had thought about it, I said,
"I will, then, be a toad."(Thank you, Steven Crane)

Think outside the box!

Porsche, Corvette, and Ferrari owners all do it I know. Why not SLK. I do it. If I get a wave back great, if not no harm done.

We do it too.. get the odd wave back, but sadly Galo is right.

I think people have become rather "insular" in the last 20-30 years. I agree with Curro - people used to enjoy their cars for how unique they were - even something quirky like a Beetle.

Other threads on this topic...the consensus seems to be - WAVE and encourage others to get outside their comfort zone. And if they should stop for a chat, invite them in!

PS Sandra, waves from a lady in a TT will just inflate all the local SLKers' egos!

...thought as much. Well, in 3 weeks or so when I start crusin' in my new SLK, I'll be waving or otherwise acknowledging fellow SLKs on the road. If I don't, just mark it up to my paying attention to the road and my new toy a little too much ...not ignoring you!

("My" ship was in contact while it went through the Carribean this morning, but is out of touch again until it hits Panama on Tuesday. At least it didn't get lost in the Atlantic.)

To me the "wave" was not a recognition of self but recognition of "kindred" spirit. When I began motorcycling the wave was a way to feel secure in that if your bike broke down (common) someone would assist you. Now, the wave seems more like "oh I have the same preference vehicle".

Always used to wave at other S2000 owners, but most S2000 owners are enthusiasts and have bought the car for very similar reasons. I don't view the SLK in the UK in the same light, there are a lot more "normal" people driving SLKs......it's not as focused as an S2000, for example why buy a diesel sports car?

Men tend to respond more than women, and that is even if the little one waves. Lots of grumpy lady SLK drivers here

Yup, he's a maniac! Pulls right in beside you, hops out of his car, huge smile on his face and immediately extends his hand. Then tells you all about SLKWorld and why you should join. After all that you're almost scared NOT to join

I can't speak for the grumpy ladies, but here we must be cautious because a simple wave could be considered a 'come on' to a guy.

I have noticed that a large number of women are on cell phones either talking/texting and don't have an extra hand to drive yet alone wave to another SLK. I still and always will wave and smile at EVERY SLK I see and I'm not the least bit concerned as my Ruger always accompanies me!

Today I tried to 'emergency blink' an oncoming R171 SLK55. The guy was completely oblivious. :/

Here in the rural southern Illinois traffic density is pretty low. There are only 16,000 people in our 400 square mile county. On country roads people usually wave regardless of the vehicle. When in town, I always recognize a few people with a wave.

To me waving is polite behavior, just like greeting someone in person with Hello or How's it going? I think getting bent from a lack of response is simply over thinking the social equation. The pleasure of my day is not diminished just because someone doesn't wave back.
