WARNING: Do not use SatNavDirect on Ebay!!!

All,

Just wanted to post a warning about an Ebay UK Shop called SatNavDirect.

I recently purchased what was advertised as a genuine Becker Map Pilot with latest maps to go in my SLK.

It was fine when I received it, but I plugged it into my PC, using the Becker Content Manager software, to see if it needed any updates. It asked me if I wanted to update the Firmware, which I said yes to. After about 5 minutes of waiting, the screen went red, and informed me that there was a problem with the unit.

As I hadn't purchased the unit from MB, I contacted Becker direct, who were very helpful. Eventually, they suggested I send the unit back to them to have the Firmware properly reinstalled.

I have this morning received the unit back, with a letter, which reads:

"Enclosed you will receive the Becker Map Pilot that was sent to us. We cannot help you. The device sent to us is a manipulated device. This is the reason for the issues you have with the unit. The device is manipulated in a way that it can log on with a wrong device number and so the illegally installed maps can be used. In the case of manipulated devices we reject any service. In this case we will not take legal action."

I've raised a case with Ebay, and the seller has just responded with:

"HI Becker unit was illegally instaled maps? Really sorry about that but we are reseller company. We buy all becker units from Germany big amount and sell. We are not make any updates or something. You can return back to as and we will make full refund. Let me know please."

I'll send it back for a refund, but wanted to share, so that others don't get stung...

Sorry to hear you have the Becker bug problem:-((
I am surprised Becker gave you an answer at all. I had the exact same problem, i.e. dead on firmware update. However, mine was original and sold by Mercedes in Sweden, and never used (previous car owner kept it in it's original box in the boot).

Becker gave the usual frontline support, "try rebooting, etc.," but nothing worked, and then Becker simply stopped replying via mail, and customer support started to say that "an expert would call back". But 15 phone calls to Germany and 8 weeks later I returned the Becker unit to my Merc dealer.

But, since the unit was several years old they said warranty was out, but promised to look into it. When they could not fix it either they sent it to Becker for repair. I said I would pay for the service. But the Swedish dealer never heard back from them, and Becker did the same "an expert will call you back dance routine" with them as well. So after another three months they gave up and gave me a brand new unit. Which was very great of them.

I don't think the "wrong map code" upload is what bricked it. I think there was/is a bug in their updating firmware procedures on some older units, which have skipped intermediate updates. Unfortunately neither me nor my Merc techies could figure out how to "unbrick" the unit, and Becker provided no support what so ever. I tried everything, on Windows as well as on Macs, but to no avail. Bottomline, my local Merc deal was fantastic, Becker, not so great... The new unit is working as it should, but, I would recommend a Tomtom instead, much more bang for the buck. (The Audio 20 /Command integration with Becker does look nice though, but using it for trips and route planning, not so great...).

I think I'll just be using Google Maps!

Once bitten...

(I owned a Philips Radio Cassette when I was 13. It broke, and I've never bought another Philips product since - I'm now 50!)
