Miata ?

I have often seen our friends in the USA refer to owning or have owned a Miata. That until now has never conjured up anything in my imagination. I have just found out it is what we call the MX5 in the UK! Is it just me?

Possibly Jules... Yes, the Miata in the US is the MX5 in the UK... and it's also known as the Eunos in some countries too.

On this one, I have the advantage of having an MX5 fan in the house though (Jono) - and, at only 20, he's already on his 2nd MX5 (actually, his first was really an imported Eunos - less rust than most UK MX5s of the same age)!

They call it the Mazda MX5-Miata here. That's how it was released in N.A. Wiki reports:

Quote:
The Mazda MX-5, released as the Mazda MX-5 Miata /miˈɑːtə/ in North America and as the Eunos Roadster in Japan, is a lightweight two-seater roadster. .....

Since the launch of the third generation, Mazda has consolidated worldwide marketing using the MX-5 name with the exception of the United States where it is marketed as the MX-5 Miata

I had a mark 1 for about 4 years till 2010. It was the most fun car to drive. Drove across England, then from France down to the Nurburgring. Went round it a few times, absolutely brilliant but very scary at the same time. The MX5 is not the most popular sportscar for nothing. The only reason I got rid of it and got an slk was because it aggravated my bad back. The cockpit was sparse with very little to distract you so all you had to do was enjoy the ride.

Back in August when I was looking for a 'vert, I saw the new 124 at my local Chrysler store. Took it for a test drive and it was soooooo much fun, I was ready to pull the pin on it (black on black).

Not one to rush into things though (I research most purchases to death), I kept researching autotrader ads. There was a yellow '03 vette that caught my eye at another local dealership but after reading about a multitude of mech issues, I knew it wasn't for me.

At the time I limited myself to '14 or newer 'verts. I don't know why but one day I changed the older date criteria and went' to '12.

That's when I found my current ride.

Now I had a decision to make: did I go with a (cheaper) brand new unit or with a 4 yr old one.

One big problem I had was that with the Fiat, it only came with one engine variant. Base model was about $6000 cheaper than the top model BUT the top one still had the same engine as the base. It just had a few more 'toys' tacked on.

Bummer dude.

I knew that the '55 had a V8 in it. And it was more $$$ than the Fiat.

Hmmm.. Fiat vs MB? Let's look at a few more differences.

Quote:
The Spider’s powered by the same 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder as the Fiat 500 Abarth. With 160 horsepower (165 in the 124 Abarth) and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, it’s more powerful than the Mazda Miata but more importantly – there’s also more torque.
Hmmm 160 HP vs 415-418 HP (it seems to vary for some reason depending on which article you read)
Hmmm 184 lb torque vs 398 lb torque.

Well, this turned out to be a no brainer. My '55 is presently being prepared for her long winter sleep.

Asleep but not forgotten. C'MON SPRING!!!!

On the Wirral the 55 never sleeps.

I just can't go without my fix.

I too have owned a Eunos - I had it imported from Japan - twas a great car - loads of fun ...

but Ohhhhh my back suffered greatly in it, so last year I sold it - as it happens for more than I paid in the first place , Bought an MGF which was much more comfortable ... but oh so boring compared to the Eunos

As I've had a CLK 320 for a while SHMBO suggested a SLK .... the rest they say .....

Miatas are a blast to drive. I've had two red ones, 95 & 97. I dig the pop up headlights and the click-click--BAM top drop as you're driving. The only limitation is the desire to keep your arm attached while you drive with one hand and take it off with the other. I love my SLK but it feels like a big cumbersome dinosaur in comparison. Actually, there is no comparison.

I showed a (rather pompous) coworker a picture of the SLK before I bought it. He asked, in typical smug fashion, "Is that a Miata? I tried to drive one of those things once and I couldn't even shift it". (He's a big boy). The only answer I gave him was "No, this is a little more mature than a Miata". I didn't waste my breath with rebuttal.

And if I'm not mistaken, the first one I had was a Miata MX5. The second was just a Miata. Difference in options I think.

Cool

Had one as well. Loved it! As close as I could get to the MGBs of my youth, without all the incessant headaches (that I found challenging in my younger days, but now find irritating in my old age).

I also owned a Miata what a blast that car was. I am surprised that MB did not tap the market yet offering a 2 seater below the SLK. Sure would get me back buying a Mercedes. Also if the new MX 5 is not fast enough for you there is always the V8 Option kit. A bit pricey at 5oK

I've always called them Miatas because that's how they were sold in the US. The latest model emphasizes MX-5 more. We still have one because my wife couldn't decide to sell it. No question which car we'd take on a trip - the SLK is much better. On just one twisty road, the Miata is more fun. Shifting is much nicer in the Miata. Around here, the twisty roads are often at high altitude and the Miata loses power noticeably. The Miata (ours has the Torsen LSD) is better in the snow. The SLK traction control is kind of annoying at times in snow. Overall, the SLK is a better all-around car and not a bad place to be, but don't let the specs fool you, Miatas are fun.
