Mercedes-AMG R50 Set To Get Track Only Version

The German automaker is expected to showcase the R50 in concept form next year, as that will be the time when the AMG division currently owned by Daimler will mark its 50th anniversary since it was founded.

For those of you that do not recall, AMG used to be an independent company, which was eventually brought closer to Mercedes-Benz over the years. Ultimately, it became a division of the corporation that owns the three-pointed star brand.

Since this is an exclusive hypercar, Mercedes-AMG is also considering a track-only version. It will cater to the needs of buyers that want more than driving a road-legal car on the track. In other words, the race-only variant of the Mercedes-AMG R50 will come to market in the form of Mercedes-Benz' answer to Ferrari’s FXX-K.

As usual with hypercars, the road-legal version will be far too extreme in performance for the average driver, while the track model will only add a notch of insanity to the mix.

Fortunately for those that get to drive these creations, the power delivery of modern hypercars (excluding barn-built models) has attained a level that makes them controllable in most situations.

Since the base model is already a hypercar, which will also come with active aerodynamics and a carbon fiber body, it will be interesting to see what Mercedes-AMG will design for the extreme version of the model. After all, it is supposed to be even lighter than the road-legal version, and the former already has active aero and a body made mostly out of carbon fiber.

The Formula 1 inspired engine should not come with dramatic modifications, but a modest power bump could be expected from the track model. If it gets all the right approvals, it could be shown in concept form as early as 2018.
