So after two weeks in sunny, rainy, thundery Floriduh, I'm back home. Home to a drop in temperature of nearly 40F, more aggressive drivers, narrower roads, and impossible parking. But back home to my little SLK! Got into it to pick up the dogs from kennels and couldn't resist wiping every car I met up with - well, almost, although there was this Porsche Carrera......!
But this is a motoring forum, so I should stick to the point.
In the US, the kind people at Avis upgraded my rental to a Ford Mustang, so I had the chance to compare with my little SLK. OK, it's faster - with that engine it flipping well should be - it has a really nice growl under acceleration, but...............
I found it sloppy compared to the SLK, handling wasn't nearly as precise, fast in a straight line but inclined to wallow cornering fast because the suspension is a good bit softer. The seats don't hold you as well as the Merc and the steering is just a little too light - you don't get much of a feel for the road. In a straight line, or on the generous American roads, the Stang is fine, but over this side of the pond I'm afraid I see it as a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing.
But I did enjoy the experience!
