Mercedes-Benz takes the wraps off E-Class All-Terrain

Needs vinyl wood panels.

The German automaker is finally ready to answer the threat posed by Audi’s A6 Allroad – but it will also have to face off with the serene Swedish competitor, the Volvo V90 Cross Country.

We already know what’s in store for this niche – if you fell the crossovers and SUVs are overestimated but still want something more rugged than a regular wagon, there are some neat choices in the midsize luxury segment nowadays. The newest “kid” on the block is the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain, based on the E Class Estate but with added ground clearance. Of course the new model’s design is not really a surprise – take the already known station wagon, lift it a little bit and add plastic body cladding on the wheel arches along with front and rear skid plates for extra protection. The E-Class All-Terrain has the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system coming in standard, as well as the Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension. There are three new sets of 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels and the interior has an aluminum-carbon look trim and “All-Terrain” lettering on the floor mats and stainless steel pedals.

The Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain will be available at launch in the E220d 4MATIC guise with 194 horsepower (143 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. That would be enough to sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in eight seconds and will top out at 144 mph (232 km/h). A more powerful six cylinder will be arriving later, with both engines mated to the nine-speed automatic transmission from the get go. The E-Class All-Terrain also has the Dynamic Select system as standard, with the All-Terrain mode lifting the car by up to 0.7 inches (20 mm) when driving at speeds of up to 22 mph (35 km/h). The air suspension has three levels – lifting up to +1.3 inches (+35 mm). Depending on conditions, the ground clearance can go between 4.7 and 6.1 inches (121 and 156 mm).
