G-Box turns the Mercedes G-Wagen into a self-contained off-road camper
Back in 2013, we looked at the Ququq box, an all-in-one camper box similar to European competitors like the Qubiq and Yatoo. We liked the simple design and pricing on the Ququq, but the list of vehicles didn't necessarily include every model we might like to take camping, especially if our camping plans were to include off-roading. But Ququq has been expanding its line to fit additional vehicle models, and its latest product, the G-Box, transforms the famed Mercedes G-Class into the G-Camper, a powerful force in multi-day off-road exploration.
While brands like Ququq aim to make camper conversion quick, simple and relatively universal, the many variables of different makes and models mean that each camping box is only compatible with a limited number of vehicles. The original Ququq box is good for small vans like the Citroën Berlingo and VW Caddy, and Ququq added the BusBox last year for larger vans like the Volkswagen T5/T6 Transporter and Mercedes V-Class.
Now Ququq is journeying farther off the beaten path with the G-Box. The new camper kit features a squarer aluminum-edged, water-resistant wood kitchen box, along with a folding bed that sets up on top of it. The kitchen box weighs 88 lb (40 kg) and measures 32 x 16.5 x 30 in (81 cm x 42 cm x 76 cm), while the folding bed adds 55 lb (25 kg) and 77 x 50 in (195 x 126 cm) of sleeping surface.
The G-Box works quite simply. The main kitchen box straps down into the back of the G-Class and drops open to give access to the tailgate kitchen. The bed unfolds on top of the box, with straps holding up the other end, offering a night of sleep within the sheltered confines of the rugged G-Class shell. Ququq says it takes two minutes to install or remove the whole system.
The G-Box comes with a two-burner gas stove and windscreen on a slide-out, two stainless steel bowls, a three-piece cold-foam folding mattress, fitted cotton sheets for the mattress and two 10-liter water bottles, which work with the stainless steel bowls as a low-tech sink. Buyers also get their choice of two storage boxes or two additional 10-L bottles.
We're not sure the average G-Class owner is all that frugal (the 4x4 starts around €90,700 in Germany and $120K in the US), but the G-Box offers a camper conversion alternative that's much simpler and cheaper than the more elaborate off-road expedition vehicles we've seen at venues like Overland Expo and Abenteuer & Allrad. It creates an affordable, lightweight camper with the serious off-road capability the G-Class is known for. It also makes it easy to convert back and forth between off-road camper and basic 4x4 interiors.
Ququq showed the G-Box at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon earlier this month and has started selling it in Europe for €2,590 (approx. US$2,900). It is not able to export it to the United States at this time.
Ququq also tells us it is currently working on a separate model for the Land Rover Defender, soon to bring its in-vehicle camping to yet another iconic 4x4.
