1962 AC Cobra Legacy series replicas to start limited production
Just nine examples of the 1962 AC Cobra Legacy Series will be manufactured, painted in the exact same colors as Carroll Shelby’s original Cobra.
AC Heritage seems to be ready to take full advantage of the recent record-setting sale of the 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX 2000 – which sold at auction for $13.75 million – the biggest sum for a North American car. Now, according to a report, the company is looking to deliver a special series of nine AC Cobras in the exact 1962 specifications. They won’t be for anyone, either – costing 500,000 pounds ($666,633) each, with production to start sometimes later this year and first deliveries taking place in 2017. The AC Heritage workshop technicians have dubbed the series the Cobra Mk1 260 Legacy Edition, and all bodies will be made out of aluminum using the original tools.
The left-hand drive models will be painted blue or yellow in reference to Shelby’s original roadster, while the mechanics will also be identical – transverse-leaf front suspension and live rear axle. The engine will be new examples of Ford’s 260-cubic-inch (4.25-liter) V8. The original Cobra, CSX 2000 was a development and test car, also used for media drives. Jaguar also endorsed such a replica build – the E-Type Lightweight or the XKSS models.
