That guy must have been flying. I would love to hear if the electronics recorded his speed shortly before the crash.

Considering the legal headaches he's going to be facing, he may end up wishing he had been decapitated.

Too bad he survived... and I DO hope the truck wasn't damaged too bad and it's driver isn't too shaken.

I think you could end up under there without hitting it at high speed if the trailer didnt have an underun bar or one that gave way easily. Dont forget the front of a Corvette or an SLK would already be below the level of the trailer floor. So you would be pretty well up to the screen before something solid hit the trailer. Running into the back of anything is usually the drivers fault but we cant judge about his speed as we are not party to the accident and the circumstances.

I'm sure BH could give a better description, but yes there is an underun arrangement on semis. It's an square U shape arrangement made out of 4-6" (my guess) square steel stock - no match for a 3000lb projectile at maybe 80mph. Lucky, but inept driver. Mullholland is famous for wannabe racers.

My older brother used to race standard bred horses (that's a horse pulling a two wheel sulky/bike). One late night he and his mate are driving back in the fog in a half ton pick up, pulling a two horse trailer, two sulkies in the bed. Out of the fog, going maybe 30mph (he admitted that was too fast in hindsight), there's a Holstein in the middle of the road. The instinctively laid down across the bench seat.

The Holstein went up over the hood, cleaned off the cab, destroyed the both sulkies, and destroyed the horse trailer. They had to beg the first cop on the scene (in the days before cell phones) to shoot both horses, who were clearly not going to make it. Cow had at least one clearly broken leg, but was still moving - down it went too..

He wouldnt have faired as well if he had run into the back of my truck that had a ton of crane sat right on the rear end. Used to amaze me how many would tailgate me on the motorways when I was overtaking a slower truck. To sit a few feet away from a bright orange mass of metal towering above you must take some sort of lunatic. Because the crane was rear mounted the chassis was double height with a 6 inch high steel girder running the length of the chassis No way is that going to buckle out of the way

The truck was white. He would have seen it from a distance at night. The truck also has an under-bar on it, but the vette was wedged under it. It looks like if the truck was going at 50mph, this guy must have been going 90mph to get underneath the truck. I seriously doubt if he was going at 65mph as any deceleration from that speed will take him to 50 or less quickly.

To put in perspective, the stretch of highway he was driving in was not winding. He was either distracted or going really fast.

I'm with cheahk. There's a wide spread problem I first saw with aircraft.
Cheque book qualified - if I can afford it, I must be capable of operating it (right?!). The SLK has some considerable ability (especially in 55 trim) and I don't take it anywhere near its limits. GM has recently made the Corvette the sports car it was meant to be - and very few people that buy them ever bother to get any training in operating a performance car.

Would you state that if he had hit a car filled with children and one or more had died, or maybe your wife or Mother? He's an idiot and I'd prefer him dead than me, due to his stupidity.

The truck had an underrun Bar so he was travelling at some speed.

My Aunt used to be SOCO in UK ( Scene Of Crime Officer )
and showed me some photos when i first started driving to make me think.
The one i most remember is a car going into the side of a truck like in the photo here.
The guys head was in the back seat and i saw a photo of it. nearly vomited when i realised what it was.
The guy had been doing 80 - 90 mph on a country road and came to a crossroad and the truck was going slowly across and he didn't stop.
They calculated he had not even braked.
The only thing they identified him from was his head as the front of the car and his body were totally mangled up.
34 years later i still think about that on unlit roads and intersections, so i guess it worked.
Maybe all drivers should be shown pics lake that ???

"Under run bars"? Years ago (in another career) I completed a federal motor carrier safety class which identified the devices as ICC bars. We were taught that the bars were meant to secure a trailer to the loading dock. Our docks at McDonnell Douglas had devices that grabbed the bars so fork truck traffic couldn't walk the trailer away from the dock. Guess they might have more than one purpose. I have noticed very high differential speeds on interstate highways, with some trucks moving very slowly as compared to car traffic. A 20 mph differential can cause a terrible crash.

Accidents can happen to anyone, even good drivers. Safe driving should always be priority. To suggest that anyone deserves to die in a car accident is in very poor taste.

Living in So. Calif., I'm very familliar with that stretch. There are a few things people might not realize on this forum.

In So. Calif., we have a plague of people who drive very fast despite the traffic conditions. They constantly change lanes and engaged in dangerous maneuvers to get ahead. Too often, they pass on the right if there is a stretch open. When they hit those, they gun it to get around as many cars as they can in the open stretch they've "found". Trucks routinely stay in the right-most lane. The open stretch is there because the other cars could see the truck and already changed lanes to avoid getting stuck behind it. The article indicated the truck was moving slowly, so he still hit and wedged under a truck that was moving forward. This further suggests excessive speed.

I'd really like to see some evidence regarding his speed versus the speed of traffic at the time.
