Is this the model that if you let it completely discharge it requires a complete battery replacement at your cost?

So do people really buy cars in the Mall ?

I was in Boca Raton, Florida last week on vacation, and we wandered in a shopping mall for a little "out of the sun" time. While my wife was checking out the requisite women's clothing stores I wandered up and down seeing what I could see.

Wouldn't you know they had a car display. I moseyed on up to see what kind of cars you put in a mall down there.

A Bentley & a Rolls Royce.

Not too shabby. I guess the $250,000 Bentley was for the young 'uns, and the $320,000 Rolls was for the old folks !

No Mercedes, no Porsche, no Lambo.

But you'll be glad to hear, my Berliner friend, that the only other car on display in that mall was . . .

a Fiat 500

Was it on display, or was it just someone's bad parking?

The Tesla Model S is a fabulous car! The EPA has certified the range with the 85kWh battery pack at 265 miles. Although it should go farther in real life, that's a good number to count on. Tesla is also rolling out freeway high-speed chargers that can charge the first 150 miles in about 30 minutes and get to about 80% in an hour, with the first between LA and SanFran.

I test drove one last weekend and it truly is fabulous! The 0-60 acceleration is 4.4secs for the $100k "performance" version, but that doesn't tell the whole story. The electric motor torque is there nearly instantly at all speeds. So zipping from 40-60 is shockingly fast!

Most of the stores have a static display of the Model S drive train; check it out if you can. I call it the amazing, magical drive train because, with the motor tucked between the rear wheels and the battery pack hidden under the floor of the car, it seems like the car is running on magic. The low battery pack places the center of gravity of the car around the wheel hubs!

The car easily charges overnight, even from near empty, via a dryer outlet. As for the bricking, you would need to store it for more than six months without plugging it in for that to possibly happen. It would be like being surprised that a gas engine gets "bricked" if you don't keep oil in it.

I have a reservation for a Model S, but I'm on the fence as to whether I'm going to buy it or hold out for the next version of the Roadster.
